Employment and career opportunities

Energy Engineering graduates are well employed in energy production plants, design offices, equipment suppliers and maintenance organizations. Yours tasks can often be associated with the design, manufacture, marketing, sales, installation supervision, commissioning, production ramp, maintenance, education or entrepreneurship. You also may act as a member or a supervisory position, which requires good communication skills, project and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to acquire and assimilate new knowledge in a constantly changing global industrial business environment.
You will have the opportunity to continue your studies at Master's degree in technology by carrying out Master's degree at the University. Open University of Applied Sciences offers studies without applying for a degree student in your own or in another sector.

Curriculum objectives

The objective of the Xamk curriculum is to guarantee you the know-how required in the working life. Student-oriented learning, quality, competence demand of the working life and flexibility are the crucial aspects of the curriculum.
The core of the competence-based curriculum forms a study structure which allows you to make personal choices to build your own career path. The flexible progression of your studies is made possible through year-round course implementations, online studies and integration of work and studies (formalisation of learning).

Degree programme learning outcomes

In the field of energy engineering, a strong professional competence is needed. Instructions issued by the various authorities and guiding industry regulations are taken into account while designing the Energy and Environmental Engineering Curricula. Also, the competence elements (knowledge, skills, attitude) are deepen during your studies.
In energy engineering education, curriculum planning core competence consists of the production of energy with conventional and alternative technologies and the ability to evaluate the technical and economic exploitation of the various options. The education is based on energy production in power plants as well as electrical and mechanical engineering, power measurement and control automation equipment and management. Basic engineering skills include a solid mathematical and scientific literacy, too. The degree in Energy Engineering provides you the theoretical qualifications of a power plant supervisor, after the validity of the required work experience is accumulated.

Complementary expertise consists of combinations of features of different options. You can form you a solid power plant expert basis for studying the power plant running on hold and automation-related courses. Energy Efficiency and related service activities in the energy sector are important areas. Complementary studies allow you to become familiar with energy audit activities and clean technologies. Degree studies

In Energy Engineering studies, weekly-based schedule provides you with over three and a half years of classroom instruction under the supervision of professional instructors. At the beginning of the studies, you acquire the basic mathematics and natural sciences required for technical studies while deepening the basics of energy production, electrical and mechanical engineering, power plant measurement and control automation and hardware management. In addition to theoretical studies, there is a lot of practical exercises, exercises in measuring and laboratory work, as well as various group work and independent learning tasks, supported by various IT solutions. In groups and independent learning assignments, you are encouraged in independent information gathering and processing and goal-oriented teamwork.

You have the opportunity to speed up your graduation by including the Thesis into the fourth year autumn schedule. Utilizing previously acquired skills and knowledge can also shorten the total duration of your studies. If you are working during your studies, you may be able to complete some parts of your studies in an integrated way.

Teachers strive to promote meaningful learning and to help develop personal motivation. The learning process strives for open interaction between you and the professor. However, as a student you have a primary responsibility for your own studies and learning. You succeed when you have the desire to learn the knowledge and skills required in your upcoming career and also to practice them. The cornerstone of your learning is participation in teaching and activity and the ability to work independently.


The aim of the assessment is to support your learning and make it visible. The assessment is focused on the accumulation of knowledge, skills and competences. These are defined in the European and national frameworks of reference (EQF and NQF). Xamk uses an EQF and NQF application (assessment guidelines for students' know-how and skills (bachelor's level) in the assessment of your studies. Courses are assessed on a scale of Fail/1 - 5 or pass/incomplete. A grade of 1 is given for a satisfactory achievement.
The module assessment is conducted through qualitative methods, for example, self-assessment, peer assessment or assessment discussion led by the teacher. Modules are not assessed with grades. Instead, the aim is to help you acknowledge the comprehensive development of you competencies.

Student counseling

Student counseling supports your professional growth in acquiring the skills necessary in the working life. The counselling supports you at the different stages of your studies and improves your individual and independent learning skills. You are encouraged to make responsible and independent decisions in your studies.
Your personal study and career plans are build on the objectives of the degree programme and on the knowledge and skills acquired in the past. You will evaluate your progress and update your personal study plan at counselling meetings that take place at least once a year. In these meetings, your career plan, course options, practical raining, thesis and international studies are discussed.
You do not need to study again what you already know. In order to save time, you can demonstrate and get a recognition for the previously acquired skills, allowing you to focus on learning new skills and gaining new knowledge from your studies. Prior learning is valuable and can be made visible through the recognition process. You can apply for the recognition process if you have acquired degree-related competence in other educational institutions. If you have acquired degree-related competence at work or in your free time, you can apply for a proficiency test. It is essential that the previously acquired skills meet the aims of the degree programme and the particular course. Work experience gained during studies can also produce relevant learning. This learning can be integrated into your studies (formalisation of learning at work) provided that you have made an appropriate plan and agreed on the integration in advance. In this way, work practice and theoretical knowledge interact.
A course called Professional Growth supports your studies allowing you to discuss and reflect on the goals and progression of your studies and grow professionally by interacting with other students and teachers. Partners from the working life have a significant role to play as part of the studies are implemented by means of co-operation projects, practical training and thesis writing.
At the early stages of your studies you will be guided by tutor students. These senior students will familiarise you with the study facilities, practices and student community at Xamk and show you around the city where you are studying.
Your well-being is very important for all of us. During your studies, you have the support of the entire Xamk staff. There is a student affairs office and student health care on all Xamk campuses.

Learning environments

Xamk offers excellent facilities to support your learning. A significant part of studies take place outside the classroom. Innovation and project environments (e.g. Xinno, Xentre, CampusIT and Logistiikkaverstas Logistics Workshop), different kinds of simulation environments and teaching restaurants, eLearning environments and working-life and RDI projects will facilitate your learning. You can also conduct your studies in two authentic local environments: in the forest and at sea. (hw, mk)

Regardless of pedagogical method in use, the E-campus e-learning environment (eg. Moodle) is the base element to utilize in teaching and learning. Simulations and virtual studies are used. Power Plant Simulator training has been part of the teaching for over a decade. RDI projects and learning projects can be integrated into teaching as well. Projects are carried out in industrial installations, maintenance organizations, equipment suppliers, engineering offices and regional energy power plants. Group work and sharing of files is flexible with online tools, and professional digital environments can be used.
Adult Education is organized by exploiting the student's work conditions in a special focus on e-learning, which is essentially independent of time and place. Lecture recordings can, if necessary, review the details of the teaching via Acrobat Connect- and Moodle e-learning environment.

International perspective

The students of Xamk have good opportunities to gain international experience. Students have a possibility to study abroad in a partner institution of higher education or do practical training in a company/ organisation or do both. The length of the student exchange period is often one term, during the second or third year of the studies depending on the degree programme. The aim of the student exchange is to improve students’ abilities to work in ever increasing international market and find employment after graduation. Student exchange is essential for the activities of a high-quality educational institution, promoting the students’ professional growth and expertise. Alongside interesting courses, spending time abroad also brings you new experience, new friends, improves your language skills and increases your confidence. Xamk has a wide network of international partners. There are over 300 partners in almost 40 countries. It is possible to apply for student exchange in every degree programme.
Being international at home means completing degree studies or part of them in English. The English-language study groups include international students. Xamk has five degree programmes implemented entirely in English on bachelor level: Business Management, Information Technology, Environmental Engineering, Game Design and International Business. International Summer Term studies are arranged in English between May and August. Being international at home is a good alternative if student exchange is not possible.
In the strategy of Xamk, Russia expertise is defined as an area of specialisation. Therefore, the core studies of every degree programme include Russia studies related to the interests of the particular field. In addition, you may enhance your Russia expertise by choosing supplementary Russia studies.
The language studies available at Xamk, apart from the mandatory language studies, include German, Spanish, French and Russian. Each language can be studied for the extent of 5 to 15 ECTS credits. Versatile language skills make it easier to operate in the international field and are often a great advantage when applying for a job.

XAMK is an international university where it is possible to add elements of the international study in many ways. The objective of the international activities is to increase the students' capacity to act in an international and multicultural working life. Student exchange is part of a high-quality university study and promote the professional growth and expertise.
Also in the field of energy industry jobs have become international. We encourage you to study languages, international exchanges and training with elastic and study alternative arrangements.

Quality evaluation and development

Quality is valued at Xamk, and the staff and all students are involved in the development process. The focus is on constantly improving the quality of teaching and councelling, keeping the learning environments interesting and the content of degree programmes relevant.
We collect a significant part of the feedback data used in the development processes with surveys targeted at our students, our staff and interest groups. As a student, you play an essential role in the development of your degree programme. During your studies, you respond to several surveys. The course feedback, both mid-term and end-term, is a part of the Quality Management System as well as the preliminary survey upon admission and the education development survey and the graduation feedback questionnaire at the end of the studies.
The staff and the students discuss the feedback on different feedback forums, where they can agree on new actions and discuss the impact of earlier development measures. These forums serve as a means to voice the students’ opinions about Xamk operations and plans for development.

Työviikkopohjaisessa opiskelussa osallistut lähiopetukseen ja opiskelet työjärjestyksen mukaan. Opetus koostuu teoriaopinnoista, harjoitustöistä ja laboratoriotyöskentelystä.
