Objective

The student is able to assertively and appropriately communicate in English in the context of her/his professional field, also in unexpected situations. The student is familiar with the main terminology of her/his field and can utilise her/his language skills in expert tasks. The target skills level is B2 as described by the European Framework (CEF), also in work-related situations.
After completing the course, the student is able to assess her/his own learning and effectiveness of communication in a particular situation, effectively use language tools (e.g. online dictionaries, search engines and proof-reading functions), adjust her/his style of communication according to the situation and the other party, as well as the language skills of the people participating in the communication, describe the construction and operation of various ship types using appropriate standard terminology.

Materials

All materials will be provided by the teacher.

Teaching methods

Scheduled track:
The student attends the required number of lessons and completes obligatory assignments as instructed by the teacher.

Independent track:
Each case must be initiated by the student and will be independently decided.

Blended track:
Each case must be initiated by the student and will be independently decided.

Exam schedules

Re-sit exam dates are specifically agreed upon within 12 months of the end date of the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is primarily based on an examination.

Qualifications

The prerequisite for course participation is B2 skills level in English, recognised by grade cum laude (C) or higher in Finnish matriculation examination, passed Xamk entrance level English skills test, or passed English prep course. If the student has been advised after the entrance skills level test to participate in the prep course, it is highly recommendced that the prep course is completed before starting this course.
