Objective

You know how modelling is used in analysing environmental data. What areas can be modelled and which models are available and customarily used? You have used in practice some environmental models, and can appreciate their benefits compared to plain analytical data. You know the requirements model have on data aquisition and sensors used. You know about necessary data preprocessing technologies.

Content

- From data to models, how are models built. - Examples of environmental models in analysing waterways, soil properties and distribution of air impurities - Hands-on use of several environmental models to analyse real environmental data for problem solving The course contains 2.0 etc of integrated mathematical studies

Teaching methods

Scheduled track:
You will learn the different ways in which modelling is nowadays integrated into environmental research and environmental monitoring systems. We will go through various models that are used in environmental research, and learn the use of these "hands on" by doing exercises based on actual data from international databases and/or data available from the Mikkeli region.
You will also learn the workflow from environmental monitoring data from source to final use in an environmental model.
You will see how models are used in solving environmental problems or reducing environmental risks. You will have gained experience in doing yourself a model of a stream or lake and evaluating the environmental situation with it.
