Objectives

By completing this degree programme you learn how to develop your organisation’s data management and how to identify development targets.
The degree programme gives you practical skills to develop your own work. You learn how to develop organisations’ operations by improving data management and digital archiving. You become familiar with the technologies used in the systems of digital archiving and are able to participate in software procurement processes.
The main topics deal with the formation of digital information as well as how to process and preserve it. An important topic is the reuse of digital information, and how to account for data protection and information security.
After completing the degree programme you understand the meaning of data management as a part of organisations’ operations and you know the requirements of information preservation. You identify challenges and possibilities of data management and digital archiving. You understand the organisation as a combinations of processes, data and information systems. This degree program gives you practical skills and knowledge to develop your own work.

Degree programme description

The degree programme consists of 90 ECTS credits, divided into core competence and complementary competence studies.
Core competence studies give you an overall view of developing information management. You learn how to link information management and its development with other operations in your organisation. In addition, you learn to understand the meaning of digital preservation and archiving as part of information management. You also learn to identify opportunities and challenges in digital preservation.
Core competence studies provide you with appropriate knowledge of applying research and development methods in information management. You also gain competence to participate in the procuration of information systems and development projects as an expert of your own field.
You can choose complementary competence (15 ECTS credits) studies from a wide supply of Xamk’s Master School’s common studies according to your interests. These common studies cover courses both in Finnish and English, and you can also study online and take blended studies. The common studies to choose from include the following:
• Research and development
• Management, leadership and entrepreneurship
• International working environments
• Information, digital services and networks
You can also choose complementary competence studies from other universities, if they are at the lever of master’s degree. In case you have previously completed studies at the level of EQF 7, and they match the objectives of the degree, they can be recognised as part of your studies. Implementation of studies

Flexible studies on the side

The programme is arranged as in multiform learning so you can learn on the side, but job is not precondition of studying. You can put the studies in good use by integrating course assignments to your own work and organization. Studies include online meetings. You can study independently or within a group.

RDI and cooperation with world of work

Cooperation with world of work consist of both students’ work experience and Xamk’s networks. The studies involve practical examples from working life. You can develop and create new practices for information management and digital archiving by sharing experiences with your co-students.
The degree programme cooperates with Xamk’s RDI department, especially with Digitalia – Research Center on Digital Information Management. There is also cooperation with companies operating in the field of information management or digital archiving and with universities offering education in the field.

Learning environments

The most important learning environments are the online learning environment Moodle in addition to group work and conversations arranged during face-to-face studies. Courses may include case studies and familiarization with different information management systems.
