Structure of the studies in the Degree Programme in Business Management (safety and security):

- core competence studies 105 ECTS credits
- complementary competence studies 45 ECTS credits
- elective studies 15 ECTS credits
- practical training 30 ECTS credits
- bachelor’s thesis 15 ECTS credits

The contents of the programme emphasize, for example:

- security operating environment
- profitable security business
- cyber security and crisis management
- management and working as a supervisor
- the future of the security sector

The student’s workload is about 800 hours (30 ECTS credits) during one semester.

A natural part of studying is cooperation with companies and the authorities. During the courses you work on various projects, for example in accordance with company assignments. You learn to know the companies and other stakeholders in the area and identify the opportunities they offer. This will also help you find an interesting practical training place and thesis topic.

Orientation options
In your studies, you will choose an orientation that deepens your skills. Its scope is at least 45 ECTS credits, and you can also choose optional studies. It is possible to choose 45-60 ECTS credits of complementary competence studies in the field of security industry.

Objectives

The Degree Programme in Business Management focusing on safety and security will give you the knowledge and skills required in the security industry. You learn a wide range of skills in the security industry that give you the ability to work even in demanding security tasks. You learn to face different customer situations and how a company operates profitably. You learn to understand the security industry environment and future technologies.

This degree programme opens up many career options for you. You can work as a security expert, developer and supervisor. You can also create a career as a successful entrepreneur. In your studies you are encouraged to work in an entrepreneurial way and you will cooperate with companies and authorities. This helps you create networks, open up new opportunities and boost your employment.

There is no specific basic level education requirement for this degree programme – it is suitable for those who are interested in the security industry and business administration.

RDI and cooperation with world of work

At South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, you can develop your expertise in the real working world. Professional learning projects are carried out in collaboration with students, working world representatives and teachers.

In your studies you can be involved in many work-related learning projects, often for several different organizations. Your knowledge, skills and attitudes evolve and grow and you can create important contacts and connections with the world of work.

Implementation of studies and flexible learning tracks

The degree programme is implemented as full-time studies on Savonlinna campus. The teaching methods are diverse, and as the studies progress, you can complete some of them partially online. At the beginning of the studies, a personal study plan (HOPS) is drawn up, taking into account your previous skills and career plans. Your learning is supported by the Learn online learning environment and the Adobe Connect web conferencing system.

Objective

You are able to communicate in spoken and written situations in your own field.

The objectives are based on the Common European Framework of Languages, level B1 and Government Decree 1129/2014.

After completing the course with the grade of 3, you are able to:
- understand clear standard and work-related speech.
- use basic structures reasonably well both in spoken and written situations.
- speak relatively fluently so that occasional mistakes in pronunciation or prosody do not lead to misunderstanding.
- describe your education and work experience for example when applying for a job.
- describe and discuss key issues of your professional field (eg. the operation, products, processes or services of companies and/or organizations).

This course has special focus on safety and security.

Scheduled learning:
Lessons according to the timetable.

Independent learning:
This course can also be taken as independent online studies during the summer term.

Employer connections

Integration with working life may be possible for some of the contents and tasks of this course. The student is asked to negotiate the options with the lecturer before the course starts.

Exam schedules

Home assignments must be handed in before the end of the course and prior to the exam. Final exam on campus. Exam resits will be scheduled individually in May-June, 2nd resit in August - October if needed.

5 study credits equals 135 hours of studying.

In order to pass the course the student has to pass both the oral and written exams. Both exams are taken under supervision.

Assessment methods and criteria

Course evaluation will be based on language skills proven in the written and oral exams. The oral and written skills in Swedish will be noted separately on the Bachelor's degree paper. Assessment grading is 1-3 for satisfactory and 4-5 for good skills, according to the national evaluation criteria.
