Degree programme description

The common competences in the degrees of universities of applied sciences are: learning competence, ethical competence, working community competence, innovation competence and internationalization competence. The competences of the Degree Programme in Building Services Engineering are system competence, indoor environment, energy efficiency, design competence, implementation competence, management and maintenance.

The core competence of the Degree Programme in Building Services Engineering (BSE) bases on a profound knowledge of HVAC systems and the management of energy efficiency of buildings. You learn about the phenomena of science and how to apply them for solving technical problems. The main part of building services engineering is HVAC which includes heating, ventilation and air conditioning as well as water and sewage systems in buildings.

During your studies you get diverse abilities for HVAC tasks. After graduation you have an educational qualification for HVAC design or site management jobs required by the Finnish building regulations.

Your studies include practical training and optional studies that can either deepen you BSE knowledge or widen your perspective to entrepreneurship, Russian knowhow or digital technology.

Objectives

The core competence of the Degree Programme in Building Services Engineering (BSE) bases on a profound knowledge of HVAC systems and the management of energy efficiency of buildings. You learn about the phenomena of science and how to apply them for solving technical problems. The main part of building services engineering involves HVAC which includes heating, ventilation and air conditioning as well as water and sewage systems in buildings.

During your studies you get diverse abilities for HVAC tasks. After graduation you have an educational qualification for HVAC design or site management jobs required by the Finnish building regulations.

RDI and cooperation with world of work

A wide network of companies supports your studies. You can complete a part of your studies in real life working tasks. You can also use the RDI projects of our university as your learning environment. Both the local and national enterprises of the HVAC field as well as public organizations are actively involved in the studies of building services engineering. Visiting lecturers are involved in several courses, and enterprises organize courses on their equipment and field of expertise.

Intensive collaboration with working life is an essential part of every degree programme at Xamk. It is possible to integrate studies and work on different levels and in different ways. In addition to the traditional practical training and bachelor’s thesis process, you can participate in different kinds of projects linked to working life. The projects may be carried out together with students of your own field or of other fields of study. Several research, development and innovation projects give you the possibility to connect your studies with working life tasks. Also your own workplace can serve as a learning environment, provided that your work corresponds to your field of study (formalisation of learning).

The course of the BSE project office module develop your project management skills in a real world projects done for real clients. Also practical training and bachelor’s thesis give you an opportunity to learn about companies, their way of working and developing operations.

Implementation of studies and flexible learning tracks

Talotekniikan koulutus järjestetään Mikkelin kampuksella. Opinnot järjestetään päiväopintoina eli lähiopetusta järjestetään maanantaista perjantaihin.

Career opportunities

Typical jobs for a bachelor of engineering specializing in BSE are for instance HVAC designer, project engineer, site manager, HVAC controller, facility manager, production manager, marketing engineer or teacher. As an engineer you can also become an entrepreneur. In addition, there are jobs available abroad through international cooperation and in export business. In the future there is more and more need for experts of energy efficiency issues.

After graduation you have the option to apply for master’s degree studies at Xamk Master School. The eligibility for master’s degree studies requires that you have a relevant bachelor’s degree and the minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience after graduation. The master’s programme of building services engineering focuses on the energy efficiency of buildings and the indoor climate.

Learning environments

Xamk offers excellent facilities to support your learning. A significant part of the studies takes place outside the classroom. Innovation and project environments (e.g. Xinno, Xentre, CampusIT and Logistiikkaverstas, Logistics Workshop), different kinds of simulation environments and teaching restaurants, eLearning environments and working life and RDI projects facilitate your learning. You can also conduct your studies in two authentic local environments: in the forest and at sea.

The studies of BSE take mostly place on the Mikkeli main campus. There are up-to-date classrooms and appropriate IT equipment available on campus. Students can use Xamk’s just renovated, all-round HVAC laboratory that enables many different measurements and laboratory tasks. A modern project work environment is also in your use right beside the laboratory.

Xamk’s online learning environment is the Moodle-based Learn environment. Tools of social media are used for sharing information with study groups, for example.

Content scheduling

In Part 1, we learn about innovation and the resource-wise economy. We also familiarize ourselves with the Environmental Protection Act and the environmental permit.

In Part 2, we consider whether environmental protection can be turned from investment to return? We also use Statistics Finland's tables to find out how much money is invested in environmental protection in Finland and where the money is spent in the sectors. In addition, you will learn what an environmental system is and what it is used for.

In Part 3, the student first becomes acquainted with the principles of responsibility reporting and then with the responsibility report of the company of their choice. At the end of the course, we will look a little at environmental communication and what good environmental communication is like?

Further information

No contact, course is based on tasks which are graded.
