Objective

The student can explain the special nature of logistics services, he/she knows the business environment of logistics service providers (LSPs), he/she can produce new service ideas using service matrices as a tool for planning effective services and plan the productization of logistics services. The student knows the principle of activity based costing and can use it in logistics service processes. The student can analyse the business of a LSP and write a consulting report suggesting development ideas for the company. The student is aware of sustainable development´s requirements in LSP´s business.

Content

Description and nature of services focusing in logistics services. VAL –services. Services and the business environment of logistics services providers (LSPs). Quality of logistics services, the use of Service Process Gap Analysis (Parasuraman, Zeithaml & Berry) in finding problems in the service process. Service matrices, classification, developing and productization of logistics services using the Service Positioning Matrix (Collier & Meyer) or Service Process Analysis Matrix (Tinnilä & Vepsäläinen). The use of activity based costing in logistics service processes. Consultation report written as a group work for a case company for developing the company´s logistics services putting emphasis on the service development. Report is written in three phases: analysis of the company´s business, improving the business and quality system and cost accounting.

The assessment is based on assignments, the consulting report and exam. Excellent 90-100 % (5), good 80-89 %(4), satisfactory 70-79 % (3), passable 50-69 % (1-2), fail < 50 % (0)
