Objective

Part I:
You understand the atomic structure, periodic table and chemical bonding.
You understand behavior of solids, liquids and gases.
You can balance a chemical equation and performe stoichiometric calculations for example in reactions of acids and bases and in combustion reactions.

Part II:
You know chemical work safety and the warning signs of chemicals.
You know how to perform thermochemistry calculations.

Content

Part I:
How does the structure of an atom affect the chemical behavior of an element?
What information do you get from the periodic table?
How does the chemical bonding affect the behavior of matter?
What information do you get from the phase diagram and what are the gas laws?
What information do you get from the reaction equation?
How do you perform stoichiometric calculations and what are acid-base reactions and combustion reactions?

Part II:
What is chemical work safety?
How do you calculate enthalpy changes, free energy changes and entropy changes in chemical reactions?

Evaluation

Students can
-use professional vocabulary and concepts proficiently.
-identify interrelated tasks.

Course material

Study materials are provided by the teacher via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

• The course is carried out by way of contact teaching on Kotka campus according to a weekly schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, scheduled contact lessons are not recorded nor duplicated by online lectures.
• Students make progress by attending scheduled lessons and completing tasks. The course consists of 24 lessons and assignments.
• The course consists of two parts which are separately assessed: Part 1: 2,5 credits and Part 2: 2,5 credits.

RDI and work-related cooperation

The course does not include RDI and workplace collaboration.

Timing of exams and assignments

The course includes two exams, the schedules of which will be announced in Learn.

The course includes scheduled assignments that need to be submitted.

The end date of the course is presented in the course details. By this date, the student must submit all assignments according to a separate schedule and take the required exams.

Student workload

• 1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student.
• In a 5-credit course, the students total maximum workload is approximately 135 hours including lessons, assignments and independent study.

Course part description

The course is divided into two parts, each with a separate exam.

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s performance is assessed with reference to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The completion of the course requires the submission of exercises and exams to be completed with a passing grade.
