Objective

You are able to actively use the basic professional vocabulary of your field.
You are able to look for information in English in professional sources and apply it in different study and work related communication situations.
You are able to communicate in English in various spoken and written situations in your professional field ritten situations in your professional field.

Content

What professional vocabulary is essential in your professional field?
How to look for information in professional sources in English and how to apply this information?
How to interact in spoken communication situations in English and how to draw up texts in English for professional purposes?
How to communicate in study-related situations and work communities in English?

Evaluation

Students can
a) use professional vocabulary systematically.
b) look for information in the key information sources of the field.

c) identify interrelated tasks.
d) communicate orally and in writing in the workplace, with customers, target groups and the users of applications and services provided in the field.

In addition to these, the assessment of English studies relies on the competence levels defined in the Common European Framework of Reference and the national skills level descriptions based on the European framework. Grade 3 requires primarily level B2 skils.

Course material

Study materials will be published in Learn at the start of the course.

Study forms and methods

Independent online studies which include 4 time-specific online lessons on Teams. Participation is not mandatory but highly recommended and requires a sufficient online connection with a camera and a microphone.
Teacher's instructions are available during the online lessons and during the course at other times, as well.
Studying takes place on Learn platform which will become available when the course starts.

RDI and work-related cooperation

The course enhances practical nursing communication skills.

Timing of exams and assignments

The course ends at the time given in the course info. The assignments, tasks and exams need to be ready by that time.
A written test will be taken in Exam, either on Xamk campus or any other campus that allows exam visits. Oral test will be taken online via Teams.
A more detailed schedule and assessment criteria will be discussed at the start of the course.

Student workload

A 3-credit course equals approximately 80 hours of student work, including online lessons, independent assignments and other related studying.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is done according the learning goals and assessment criteria. Assignments and tests will all need to be passed in order to pass the course.
Assessment scale: 1 - 5.

Qualifications

The student can communicate independently in communication situations (level B1).
