Objective

You know basic body functions.
You know the anatomy and physiology of body parts undergoing pathological changes while aging.
You know the concepts and laws of preventing infections.
You understand the significance of infections to individuals and society.

Content

How do the body functions work and what is relationships between them?
How do blood circulation, respiration, digestive system and urination work?
What kind of features do microbes have?
What is infection?
How do immunological processes work?
What are the characteristics of the most common infectious diseases?
What is infection preventing?
What is the importance of asepsis and hand hygiene?
What are aseptic methods?

Evaluation

Students can
a. use professional vocabulary systematically.
b. look for information in the key information sources of the field.
c. identify interrelated tasks.
d. work together with clients, users and target groups.
e. use the key models and methods of the professional field.
f. justify their actions according to the ethical principles of the professional field.

Course material

You can use any anatomy and physiology book of your choice as a textbook for your studies. The study tasks in Learn demonstrate the required level of competence. For microbiology and infectious diseases, the exam material is the material shared in Learn and the assigned materials.

Anttila et al. (eds.) 2018 (or possibly a newer edition): Prevention of care-related infections. THL. as well as material in Learn and other material assigned by the teacher.

Study forms and methods

Teaching is organized in the ZOOM online learning environment and the Learn learning platform. Online teaching allows you to achieve your own learning rhythm.

Course part description

The anatomy and physiology section and the microbiology and infectious diseases section are taught interactively online. The teaching is marked in the work schedule. The teaching is recorded and the recording can be viewed on Learn if you are unable to participate in the interactive teaching.

The infection control and asepsis section is taught in person, which includes theory, aseptic practice exercises and group assignments. Oppiportti online course.
