What role do communication and interaction play in your studies and the world of work?
What interaction skills are required in your own studies and in your future profession?
How do you search reliable information from different sources and use it ethically?
Which written skills (genres, styles, tools) should you master?
How do you explain your views appropriately in standard language?
How do you prepare and deliver a spoken presentation?
How do you assess your own presenting skills and manage stage fright?
What skills do you need in different group communication situations?
How do you give feedback and use feedback from others?
Evaluation
The course Finnish communication skills takes place at the entry-level of the learning process. Assessment is primarily based on criteria b-f.
Students achieving level 3 can
b. search information from field-specific sources, treat it critically and use it ethically in their written and spoken communication
c. understand interrelated tasks and complete them as scheduled
d. and f. communicate appropriately in different situations
e. use the appropriate writing templates and referencing guidelines.

The study materials collected and prepared by the teacher and students can be found on the Learn platform of the course and in the Teams application.
Study forms and methods
A Week-based Scheduled Track:
You will study in accordance with the schedule and the assignments defined by the teacher. Some assignments are online.
A Work Integrated Blended Track:
The course as a web implementation.
RDI and work-related cooperation
The course involves training in sectoral vocabulary and communication situations.
Timing of exams and assignments
The exams are done as part of the course assignments. The exams and assignments are done during the course.

Scope of the course 5 cr = 135 hours of student work
Further information
Communication skills must be completed before you can undertake research methods studies, possible third-year in-depth studies/seminar work and thesis.
Evaluation scale
1-5
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation is done in relation to the competence goals and evaluation criteria of the course. Successful completion of the study course requires active participation in face-to-face teaching, learning tasks, proof of competence and taking exams with an approved grade. Grading scale: 1–5
Written and spoken assignments related to course, individual and group work, tests and student activity. Teacher assessment, self-assessment and peer assessment.
The assessment of the course emphasises the criteria b–f.
Active participation means: The student is present at the contact teaching of the course, unless otherwise instructed in the course implementation description. Language teachers keep an attendance register for participation in face-to-face teaching.
The student participates in activities instructed by the teacher in contact teaching. The student performs assignments according to the instructions and schedule given by the teacher.
Grading scale: Excellent (5), Good (4-3), Satisfactory (2-1): Failed (0). Accepted performance requires active participation in teaching.
Qualifications
This course is for native or advanced Finnish speakers (CERF level B2 or higher).
