Objective

Students achieve the required level in chemistry studies at the University of Applied Sciences.

Content

Basics of chemistry, e.g. atomic structure and electron shell, periodic table, chemical symbols of elements and writing molecular formulas, key chemical concepts and units: e.g. mole, molar mass, amount of substance and concentration

Evaluation

Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- indentify interrelated tasks

Course material

Study materials are provided by the teacher via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

• The course is carried out by way of contact teaching on Kotka campus according to a weekly schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, scheduled contact lessons are not recorded nor duplicated by online lectures.
• Students make progress by attending scheduled lessons and completing tasks and assignments individually. The course consists of 13 lessons and individual assignments.
• The teacher provides guidance during contact lessons.
• The assessed assignments are completed independently.

RDI and work-related cooperation

There is no working life cooperation in the course.

Timing of exams and assignments

An exam must be taken in the scheduled lesson.

The course entails assignments.

The end date of the course is presented in the course details. By this date, the student must submit all assignments and take the required exams.

Student workload

• 1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student.
• In a 3-credit course, the students total maximum workload is approximately 81 hours including lessons and independent study.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s performance is assessed with reference to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The completion of the course requires exam and exercises to be completed with a passing grade.

The scale is pass/fail.
