Objective
You can actively use the basic vocabulary of your own field in English.
You can act in English in different communication situations in your field at the European skill level B2.
You can search for information in English-language sources and apply it to study and work.
Content
What essential professional vocabulary do you need?
How do you search information in sources of your field and apply it?
How do you act in English in spoken communication situations and compose texts needed in your field?
How do you communicate in English in the study community and in the workplace?
Evaluation
Students can
a) use the key vocabulary of the field in a consistent way
b) search for information in relevant sources in the field
c) identify interrelated tasks
d) act in a working community with clients, interest groups and applications of the field as well as users of services both in speaking and writing
The assessment is also partly based on the skill levels of the European Framework (CEFR). Grade good (3) requires primarily B2-level skills.

Study forms and methods
The teaching includes contact lessons on the Savonlinna campus according to the schedule. Online participation is not possible. The classes are not recorded, nor are they replaced with online lectures when contact lessons are provided according to the schedule.
The studies include group meetings according to the schedule and independent/group learning assignments.
Teacher guidance is available during classes and, if necessary, via email.
Assessed tasks are completed independently.
Various methods of feedback will be used during the course. These may include written and oral feedback as well as peer feedback.

Timing of exams and assignments
Continuous assessment and written and oral exam during the lessons on campus at the end of the course. A detailed schedule will be published at the beginning of the course.
In the course, students will complete learning assignments, which must be submitted by the given deadlines. All learning assignments for the course must be submitted by the end of the course.
Student workload
One ECTS credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload may vary depending on the student's study skills and prior knowledge.
5 credits = 135 h of student work
Course part description
The key themes of the course include: school social worker's duties, Finnish social services, the Finnish school system, social services for families, child protection, learning challenges, multiculturalism, and multi-professional collaboration. Additionally, you will study a few optional topics in more depth and create a poster on a chosen topic for a gallery walk at the end of the course.
