Objective

1. You can actively use and develop your English language skills in the work and professional field, as well as develop English communication in your organization.
2. You can interact in English in various situations of oral and written communication in your professional field.
3. You are able to search for and evaluate scientific and professional information from English-language sources in your field and you are able to
apply the information to different communication situations in working life.
4. You are familiar with Xamk's student writing guidelines and ethical practices.
5. You can find reliable sources and use them in your studies.
6. You know the Xamk source references and know how to use it in your studies.

Content

What ethical principles guide student writing?
What are the guidelines for student writing at Xamk?
How do you search for knowledge in your field?
How do you mark in-text references and references in your study assignments?
How do you deal with different communication and interaction situations?

Evaluation

a. find, study, produce and assess critically multidisciplinary data in their field of expertise.

b. solve demanding problems in research, development and innovation activities.

c. assess and manage independently individuals’ and teams’ operations.

d. be responsible for operations and develop them independently.

e. assess different strategic approaches and justify their use in terms of management and development.

f. work independently in the expert duties of their professional field or as entrepreneurs.

g. communicate proficiently and systematically in their spoken and written native language and in one foreign language.

Study forms and methods

All tasks and assignments are connected to the student's own work and/or studies and thus form an individual learning path.

RDI and work-related cooperation

The course includes studying professional field specific vocabulary and developing communication skills for working life.

Timing of exams and assignments

Our contact teaching (five days during the course) in Mikkeli campus: 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.

International cooperation

The course is an example of international cooperation.

Student workload

One credit equals 27 hours of student work.
5 x 27 h = 135 h

Course part description

During the course you will learn professional English needed at work. Your main learning objectives are:

- You can actively use and develop your English skills in your work and professional field as well as develop communication in English in your organisation.
- You can interact in English in different oral and written communication situations in your professional field.
- You can look for and evaluate scientific and professional information in the English sources of your professional field and can apply the information to various communication situations in your working life.

Your studies include 5 modules
Module 1 - Work and organisation
Module 2 - Research articles
Module 3 - The case
Module 4 - International networks and
Module 5 - Presenting the case.

Further information

These are master's level studies and require B1-B2 level skills.
Most of the work is done online, but there are 5 sessions (8 h) in Mikkeli Campus.

Assessment methods and criteria

Independent assignments, lesson activities as well as student activity in contact teaching and tasks.
