Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- essential concepts, methods and tools concerning shipboard maintenance and repair
- type of maintenance
- failure mechanisms
- diagnostic applications and devices
- failure modes in technical systems and failure reduction methods
- safety at work and environmental protection

Content

- fundamentals of maintenance
- condition monitoring and systems
- safety at work and environmental protection
- detection of machinery malfunction, location of faults and actions to prevent damage
- inspection and adjustment of equipment
- destructive examination
- non-destructive examination

Evaluation

Students can
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations
- evaluate operations in customer, user and target group situations
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices
- promote teams’ goal-oriented operation

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-III/1 column 4 are used:
- maintenance activities are correctly planned and carried out in accordance with technical, legislative, safety and procedural specifications
- the selection and use of work tools, work methods, work parameters, materials and parts is correct and the tasks are performed taking safety aspects into account
- maintenance activities are correctly planned and carried out in accordance with technical, legislative, safety and procedural specifications
- working practices are in accordance with legislative requirements, codes of practice, permits to work and environmental concerns
