Objective
The course deals with skills needed in higher education studies and considers practical methods to support successful studying. The goal is that each participant finds suitable ways for effective learning.
Themes covered in the course include time management and planning, concentration, challenges in getting started, stress and recovery, interaction and teamwork skills, as well as academic reading and writing.
Content
After the course, students can assess their own study skills and utilize study methods and learning tools that are suitable for them.
Course material
The learning material is available in the Learn environment.
Study forms and methods
During the group meetings, students work actively in small groups and pairs. Completing the course requires participation in all group meetings. In addition, students work independently between meetings.
In addition to group meetings, each student will have a personal meeting with a special education teacher during the course.
The language used in the course is Finnish.
Timing of exams and assignments
The course doesn’t include a written exam.
Student workload
1 ECTS credit equals approximately 27 hours of student work (9 hours of contact teaching and 18 hours of independent study).

Assessment methods and criteria
Completing the course requires active participation in group meetings and completion of learning assignments with a passing grade. In addition, the student participates in a personal guidance discussion, in which the student and the special education teacher together assess the student’s study skills, and the need and means to strengthen them.
