Objective

After completing the course, the student is able to communicate via VHF radio onboard a ship in routine, urgency and distress situations using standardised terminology and phrases (IMO SMCP).

Content

The course covers the following sections of SMCP handbook:
General procedures
Selected standardised terminology
Selected standardised phrases (e.g. traffic in fairway, port entry and departure, anchoring, weather and sea state, buoyage)
Urgency and distress communication

Evaluation

Students can
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations.
- look for information in the key information sources of the field.
- evaluate operations in customer, user and target group situations.
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices.

Course material

SMCP handbook, exercise materials will be provided by the teacher.

Study forms and methods

Scheduled track:
The student attends the required number of lessons and completes obligatory assignments as instructed by the teacher.

Independent track:
Each case must be initiated by the student and will be independently decided.

Blended track:
Not an option for this course.

Timing of exams and assignments

All re-sit exam dates within 12 months of the end date of the course.

Assessment is based on an examination.

Qualifications

Participation in this course requires that the student has completed the courses Maritime English 1, Maritime English 2 and Maritime English 3, or is simultaneously completing them.
