Objective
The student learns how to separate different forms of pain, how to assess the pain by using suitable assessment methods and knows how to choose different treatments variously. The student knows how to apply the knowledge in the patients or clients treatment and rehabilitation.
Content
The content consists from 5 topics, from which 1. and 2. are mandatory and the rest three the student can choose from topics 3-5. The topics are: 1. The definition of pain (1 course credit, mandatory), 2. The assessment of pain (2 course credits, mandatory), 3. The medical treatment of pain (1 course credit), 4. Non-medicated pain relief (1 course credit), 5. Chronic pain and pain management (1 course credit).

Course part description
The course covers 5 ECTS credits. It starts on 4. February and ends on 5. December. Completing the course requires writing 4 assignments on the following themes:
1 What is pain? (1 cr, compulsory)
2 Pain assessment tools: One tool must be tested in practice. (2 cr, compulsory)
3 Basics of pharmacological pain management (1 cr, optional)
4 Basics of non-pharmacological pain management (1 cr, optional)
5 Chronic pain and how to manage with it (1 cr, optional)
The first two themes are compulsory for all students. After that, you can choose the further two assignments from the themes 3, 4 or 5. You see more information about the themes in Learn when you click the pictures of the themes (1- 4; not the theme 5).
