Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- principles of navigational aids
- ability to determine errors of navigational aids

Content

Ship's navigation aids:
- magnetic and gyro compass
- (D)GPS
- log
- echo-sounder
- AIS
- VDR
- autopilot

Evaluation

Students can:
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-II/1 column 4 are used:
- ability to operate the equipment and apply the information correctly
- performance checks and tests to navigation systems comply with manufacturer’s recommendations and good navigational practice
- errors in magnetic and gyro-compasses are determined and correctly applied to courses and bearings
- the selection of the mode of steering is the most suitable for the prevailing weather, sea and traffic conditions and intended manoeuvres

Study forms and methods

Scheduled track:
You will attend teaching and guidance sessions as specified in the schedule. Lecture hours in class, familiarization with various navigation devices and student presentations.
