Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- perform duties of a rating when forming part of engineering watch
- engineering watch duties, watch routines and safety
Content
-terms used in machinery spaces and names of machinery and equipment
- watchkeeping principles of main engines, auxiliary engines and steam boiler systems
- common routines and procedures of an engineering watch
- basic environmental protection procedures
- internal communication and alarm systems
- acting in different emergency situations
- familiarity with the location and use of fire-fighting equipment in the machinery spaces and escape routes from machinery spaces

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-III/4 column 4 are used:
- communications are clear, concise and acknowledged in a seaman-like manner
- advice or clarification is sought from the officer of the watch where watch information or instructions are not clearly understood
- maintenance, handover and relief of the watch is in conformity with accepted principles and procedures
- initial action on becoming aware of an emergency or abnormal situation conforms with established procedures
