Xamk tarjoaa sinulle laadukasta ja ajanmukaista merenkulun koulutusta, joka toteutetaan kiinteässä yhteistyössä työelämän kanssa. Päiväopiskelijan muut aiemmin suorittamat opinnot tai soveltuvat merenkulun koulutukset voidaan harkinnan mukaan lukea hyväksi opintoihin. Opintojen nopeuttaminen normiajasta edellyttää aiemmin suoritettuja opintoja tutkintoon johtavassa, soveltuvassa merenkulun koulutuksessa, sekä hyväksyttyä, vähintään 6kk mittaista ohjattua harjoittelua laivan koneosastolla, ja näiden lisäksi henkilökohtaiseksi laadittua ja hyväksyttyä opintosuunnitelmaa.

Jos sinulla jo on vahtikonemestarin tutkinto, voit hakea opiskelijaksi monimuoto-opintoihin, jonka voi suorittaa työn ohessa. Halutessasi voit hakea opiskelemaan päiväopiskelijoiden kanssa, jolloin sinulle laaditaan henkilökohtainen opintosuunnitelma, missä aiempi merenkulun tutkinto luetaan hyväksi opintoihisi.

Harkinnanvaraisesti voidaan opiskelijaksi hyväksyä myös vahtikonemestarin tutkinnon suorittanut, jolta pätevyyskirja vielä puuttuu. Edelleen harkinnanvaraisesti voidaan opiskelijaksi hyväksyä sellaisen teknillisen koulutuksen saanut, mikä vähintään täyttää vahtikonemestaritason vaatimukset ja jolla on vahtikonemestarin pätevyyskirja.

Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Technology gives you the necessary knowledge and skills and pro-vides you with the mandatory certification that allow you to work on international merchant ships as an engineering officer and a chief engineer, also on ships sailing in unlimited global traffic, after you have completed the required onboard training,. You will also have the possibility to build a career ashore working for shipping companies or in other fields that require maritime expertise. By choosing particular energy engineering studies as optional studies, you will gain the theoretical knowledge of power station operations and have a chance to get an approved licence of a power station operator if you also meet the requirements for the practice needed. Energy engineering gives many career op-portunities.

If you are eager for more studies and meet the application requirements, you can continue your studies for a master’s degree in a university of applied sciences or in scientific universities in different fields. With a master’s degree, it is possible to work, for example, for the maritime administration.

Curriculum objectives

The aim of the Xamk curriculum is to guarantee that you have the updated know-how required in working life. Student-centered learning, quality, consideration of the needs of working life and flexibility are crucial aspects of the curriculum.

The core of the competence-based curriculum is the structure of degree studies which enables personal choices to build your own career path. The year-round availability of courses, online studies and integration of work and study allow a smooth progress of your studies.

Bachelor's degrees are based on the EQF (European Qualification Framework) and the NQF (National Quali-fications Framework) learning outcomes (knowledge, skills, qualifications). The degree structure and qualifi-cations comply with the objectives of the Government Regulation 546/2013.

Degree programme learning outcomes

The studies in Marine Technology are based on a curriculum of 270 credits. Your studies are con-structed according to the requirements stated in IMO STCW Manila 2010 Convention in regulations A-III/4, A-III/1 and A-III/2.

The studies consist of common core studies and professional studies of three levels: support level, operational level and management level. In addition, Marine Engineering studies include 108 credits of supervised onboard training. This training may contain engine room simulator practice, approved workshop and laboratory practice and the maximum of 180 days of suitable practice ashore. Kyamk was STCW audited in 2016.

The common professional skills of the degree programme comprise the following fields of compe-tence:

The highlighted matrice functions in the Xamk strategy such as digitalisation, Russia expertise and entrepreneurship are included in different courses of the degree programme.

Degree studies

Your Marine Engineering studies are very practical. On the first academic year, you board the training ship for eight weeks in periods of basic onboard training, alongside with your theoretical studies. Emergency operations, safety management and teamwork are the themes that you start to adopt from the very first year. During your studies you work in different ways with bridge and radio simulators to support theoretical studies and to transfer the things that you have learned to the onboard practices. English is the common maritime language and that is why the English studies are very comprehen-sive. You also have a chance to complete different additional certificates of competency in the mari-time field during your degree studies. For your optional studies you can choose languages, entrepre-neurship and other studies from other study fields.

You will know what skills your line of work requires and learn the tasks of your own trade during onboard training from the first year of studies. A great deal of your studies consists of supervised onboard training. During onboard training, you will keep an internationally approved training record book and once you have the record book signed by the vessel’s training supervisor, you will have official references to show that you have acquired the required skills. Occupational and environmen-tal safety are of utmost importance while working onboard.

You can write your thesis for a particular operator in the shipping trade as a commissioner’s assign-ment. While training onboard, you can show your strengths and motivation to the employers, which in turn can help you to find a job and get your own career started. Occasionally, the RDI department of Marine Technology at Xamk needs students to write theses in different projects and ventures, which is also a good opportunity to be involved with working-life and meet groups of experts.

The advisory committee of Kotka Maritime has strong connections to working-life. Important matters arisen in the committee meetings are discussed on campus, and these observations are taken into account when the curricula are made or updated. The whole Marine Technology staff is involved in this work when new curricula are considered and made, as well as in the making of continuous efforts to develop the content of Marine Engineering education. The Head of Education and Director of Department are responsible for the organisation of studies in Marine Technology.

Workplace pedagogy: Close cooperation with organisations and companies is an essential

part of all degree programmes. Studies and work practice can be integrated on several

levels in many ways. In addition to traditional practical training and thesis writing, with

students from any degree programme, you can carry out tasks and projects commissioned

by organisations or companies. The various research, development and innovation (RDI) projects offer you opportunities to integrate practice into your studies. If you work while completing your studies, you can integrate some of this work experience into your studies.

Assessment

The aim of the assessment is to support your learning and make it visible. The assessment is focused on the development of knowledge, skills and competencies which are defined in the European and national frame-works (EQF and NQF). Xamk applies EQF and NQF (assessment guidelines for students' know-how and skills (bachelor's level)) in the assessment of your studies. Courses are assessed in a scale of fail/1-5 or pass/incom-plete. The pass level is grade 1.

The module assessment is conducted through qualitative methods. The assessment methods can be for example self-assessment, peer- assessment or assessment discussion led by the lecturer. Modules are not assessed with

Student counseling

The aim of study councelling is to ensure that you achieve the competence necessary in the work-ing-life. The councelling will support you in the completion of courses, and improve your individ-ual and independent learning skills throughout your studies. You will be encouraged to make re-sponsible and independent decisions concerning your studies.

Your personal study and career plan will be based on the degree programme objectives and your prior learning. You will evaluate your progress and update your personal study plan at councelling meetings that take place at least once a year. In these meetings, your career plan, course options, practicaltraining, thesis and international studies are discussed.

You will not be obliged to study something that you already know. Instead, you may demonstrate your prior learning and then concentrate on learning something new. Prior learning is appreciated at Xamk and it can be demonstrated through recognition of prior learning (RPL). The studies com-pleted at other institutions of higher education can substitute courses or be included in the degree studies at Xamk. Learning achieved at work or through free-time activities can demonstrated. What is essential, is that your learning meets the objectives of the degree programme and a particular course.

Work experience gained during studies can also produce relevant learning. This learning can be integrated into your studies provided that you have made an appropriate plan and agreed on the in-tegration in advance. In this way, work practice and theoretical knowledge interact.

Your studies are supported by a module of Professional Growth which is completed throughout the duration of the degree studies. The module comprises courses which are focused on the essential aspects of your field of specialisation and the objectives and progress of your studies. You will ac-quire professional competencies through interaction with lecturers and other students. Representa-tives of organisations and companies play a key role in projects and periods of practical training, and during your thesis writing.

At the beginning of your studies, you will be guided by tutor students. They are senior students who provide peer councelling by showing you around the campus and explaining the most common study routines. They will also provide you with opportunities to get to know your fellow students and the town of your studies a little better.

Your well-being is very important to all of us. During your studies, you can contact any of our staff for guidance and support. You also have access to all student services including the student health care.

Xamk is a comfortable and safe place to study.

Learning environments

South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences offers excellent, versatile facilities for your studies. A significant portion of your studies is completed outside the classroom. You will study in innovation and project environments (e.g. Xinno, Xentre, CampusIT and Logistics Workshop), sim-ulated environments, training restaurants, online environments (eCampus), organissations and com-panies, and RDI environments. In addition, you can complete practical training in two environ-ments Kymenlaakso Region is known for: the forests and sea.

When studying for your Bachelor of Marine Technology degree, you learn by using different methods of learning. Teaching is implemented with different e-learning applications and simulators, followed by real-life onboard training in practice both on school ship and on merchant vessels.

Simulators that you use are approved for engine room simulation and, in addition, you will also work with other pc-based learning applications.

International perspective

The students of Xamk have good opportunities to gain international experience. Students have a possibility to study abroad in a partner institution or do practical training in a company/ organisa-tion or do both. The length of the student exchange period is often one term, during the second or third year of the studies depending on the degree programme. The aim of the student exchange is to improve students’ abilities to work in ever increasing international market and find employment

after graduation. Student exchange is essential for the activities of a high-quality educational insti-tution, promoting the students’ professional growth and expertise. Alongside interesting courses, spending time abroad also brings you new experience, new friends, improves your language skills and increases your confidence. Xamk has a wide network of international partners. There are over 300 partners in almost 40 countries. It is possible to apply for student exchange in every degree programme.

Being international at home means completing degree studies or part of them in English. The Eng-lish-language study groups include international students. Xamk has five degree programmes im-plemented entirely in English on bachelor level: Business Management, Information Technology, Environmental Engineering, Game Design and International Business. International Summer Term studies are arranged in English between May and August. Being international at home is a good alternative if student exchange is not possible.

In the strategy of Xamk, Russia expertise is defined as an area of specialisation. Therefore, the core studies of every degree programme include Russia studies related to the interests of the particular field. In addition, you may enhance your Russia expertise by choosing supplementary Russia stud-ies.

The language studies available at Xamk, apart from the mandatory language studies, include Ger-man, Spanish, French and Russian. Each language can be studied for the extent of 5 to 15 ECTS credits. Versatile language skills make it easier to operate in the international field and are often a great advantage when applying for a job.

Seafaring is a truly global field. Your studies include a great deal of language studies. The onboard training often takes place on a ship which has a multinational crew. In addition to this, we encourage our students to take part in student exchange programmes in our partner educational institutions abroad.

Quality evaluation and development

Quality is valued at Xamk, and all staff is involved in improving the quality of their own and the students’ activities. At Xamk, the focus is on constantly improving the quality of teaching and councelling, keeping the learning environments interesting and making the content of degree pro-grammes better meet the needs of the working-life.

A great of deal of feedback-based information is gathered by surveys regularly carried out among the staff, students and interest groups. The students play a key role in the development of the university. During your studies, you will give feedback on the quality of your education on a regular basis through e.g. course feedback, development surveys, and a final feedback survey at the end of your studies.

The staff and students usually process the feedback together in various forums where new forms of conduct are agreed and previous decisions are reviewed. These forums serve as a means for stu-dents to express their opinions and thoughts.
