Objective

After completing this course, you will be able to
* describe the cooperation of main machinery and other process devices of a power plant
* analyze the working principles of main measurement, control, valve and motor loops in power plant processes
* present the arrangement and operation of process control systems in energy production processes
* use human machine interfaces (HMI) of process control systems
* run power plant simulators and analyze power plant processes related to them.

Content

How are fuel and air feed, combustion and flue gases, water feed, steam production and power generation functionally related to each other?
How can you affect the production of high pressure steam, the electric power of a turbine or the toxic emissions of flue gases?
What type of control systems are needed in large-scale, centralized or small-scale, distributed energy production?
How should an operator take the fuel feed into a manual mode or start a feed water pump?
How should we take care of functional safety in energy production?

Course material

The following literature is used in the course
• Turbiinitekniikka ISBN 978-952-5491-92-0
• Voimalaitostekniikka ISBN 978-952-13-5426-7
• Voimalaitosautomaatio ISBN 978-952-5183-32-0
Study materials are provided by the teacher in class or via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

The course is carried out by way of contact teaching on Kotka campus according to a weekly schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, scheduled contact lessons are not recorded nor duplicated by online lectures. Lesson activities are carried out in a simulation environment. Participation in simulation exercises mandatory.
• Students make progress by attending scheduled lessons and completing tasks and assignments individually or in groups. The course consists of 14 simulation lessons and pre-assignments.
• The teacher provides guidance during contact lessons.
• The assessed assignments are completed independently.
• Feedback is provided by different methods, in writing and/or orally. Also, peer feedback can be used.
