Objective
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of working with type. For example: students understand the role of typography in graphic design students are able to produce appopriate typographical solutions for different tasks students demonstrate an overall understanding of the publishing process, from the commissioning of pictorial elements through to the delivery of final digital or print media students have skills in the use of grids, typographic style sheets, and graphic element libraries within the graphic design process of book and periodical publishing students have established a fundamental knowledge of the different formats, print, and finishing processes available in modern print production.
Content
This unit includes: typographic contrast colour hierarchy readability and legibility type as image in different lectures and assignments an outline of the key work roles within the publishing industry an Introduction to formats in publishing and to working with grids as a design tool the use of images and typography within layout to express core meanings an introduction to key prepress techniques – colour models, print and prepress terms the development of key skills in publication production such as style guides, flat planning, and generation of print orders.
