Objective

Students can use the most important basic structures and vocabulary of the Finnish language in simple everyday situations. Students can manage with the pronunciation and spelling. Students can apply the key structures in communication situations. Students can display familiarity in Finnish culture.

Content

How to communicate in cultural situations in Finland? What kind of vocabulary is needed in everyday situations? How to use the most important basic structures in simple everyday situations? How to pronounce and spell in Finnish? During the course, students read basic texts and dialogues, make pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar exercises, write short texts and prepare and give oral presentations. In addition to that, students become acquainted with the Finnish culture and typical features of the Finnish language.

Qualifications

Attending the course requires English skills enabling academic studies. No previous studies in Finnish required.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

a. Students can use basic vocabulary. c. Students can identify various contexts. d. Students can communicate in simple everyday situations. f. Students can work as team-members in a goal-oriented way. In addition, the assessment of Mamk Finnish studies relies on the competence levels defined in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Assessment takes place on the scale 0–5. It bases on active participation on the classes (at least 80 % attendance) and assignments and exams completed successfully.
