Objective
The student acquires knowledge of watch keeping routines, steering and helm orders, changing from automatic pilot to manual steering and vice versa, keeping a proper look-out by sight and hearing, procedures for the relief, maintenance, and handover of a watch, responsibilities in emergency situations, internal communication equipment, alarm and distress signals, and shipboard terms and definitions. Different types of ships and fundamentals of oil tanker practice and safety regulations. Knowledge of essential maritime labour legislation and maritime organisations. Knowledge of industrial safety legislation and conventions, risks concerning industrial safety matters, and safety requirements aboard ship.

Marine compasses, automatic pilot, helm orders and navigation practice, ranges and bearings. Vessel terminology, use of internal communication equipment. Terminology of watchkeeping and information. Tasks of watchkeeping and environmental protection involved. Responsibilities in emergency situations and alarm and distress signals. Tanker familiarization course (STCW A-V/1;1-7) Maritime labour legislation, essential maritime organisations, industrial safety legislation, law of safety at work.
