Objective

The student can handle specific verbal and written communication situations in their own field. They have a working knowledge of the terminology of the field and can use Swedish in professional situations. The objectives are based on the Common European Framework of Languages, level B1 and the Decree 352/2003 § 8, 1st subsection 497/2004. A student who, on the basis of a diagnostic skills test, has been directed to the preparatory course has to pass it or independently acquire equivalent skills before taking this course. After completing the course, the student can understand slow and clear standard and job-related speech. understand the main points of professional texts and react to and comment on them in speech and in writing. use basic structures and technical terminology of their field more or less correctly both verbally and in writing. speak relatively fluently in such a way that occasional mistakes in pronunciation or prosody do not lead to misunderstanding. communicate in Swedish in the global maritime cluster.

Content

Education, work environment, personal and educational background, professional communication by email and telephone as well as in meetings. Knowledge of basic terminology of marine technology, e.g. engine room, control room, and bridge environments, duties at sea and in port, knowledge of environmental and safety regulations. Since the content of this course is degree programme specific, the student should take the course together with his or her own group.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

According to the Act (424/2003, 6 §, subsection 1) on language skills required of state officials functioning in a position requiring a higher education in a bilingual office, the student is given a grade both for verbal and written skills. In the degree certificate, the grade satisfactory equals course grades 1-3 while the grade good equals course grades 4-5. A depiction of the evaluation criteria is in the course implementation description. Grading scale: Excellent (5), Good (4-3), Pass (2-1), Fail (0). Grades 3-5 require B1 level competence. In addition to the criteria specified in the course implementation description, active participation is a prerequisite for passing a course. Active participation means that the student attends 75% of the amount of contact lessons on the course unless the course implementation informs otherwise.  The language lecturers record attendances on the lessons in attendance registers. A course that is failed due to too many absences cannot be resat by retaking the exam. Instead, the student has to attend the course again. makes sure that they have the study material (e.g. the textbook) specified in the curriculum. takes part in the activities instructed by the lecturer in the contact lessons. completes the given homework according to the lecturer's instructions and on time.
