Objective

Students are able to communicate assertively in English in the professional context, paying attention to the demands of the situation, also in unexpected situations. Students are  familiar with the main concepts of the field and can utilise their language skills in tasks requiring expertise. The target level is B2 in the European Framework (CEF) also in work-related situations. The prerequisite for the course is grade cum laude in the Finnish matriculation examination, level B2 in the entrance level test, or pass grade in the preparatory course. A student who has been instructed to participate in the preparatory course must pass the preparatory course before they can take the exam for this course. It is advisable to pass the preparatory course before starting this course. Common goals After the successful completion of the course, students are able to evaluate their own learning, evaluate the success of communication situations, and apply their skills in new situations are able to efficiently use language tools (eg. Internet dictionaries, search engines, and proof-reading tools) are able to adapt their communication style according to the situation, interlocutor, and language skills of participants. are aware of the impact of culture on communication are able in English to draft a job application and participate in a job interview, and in these situations describe their competence and education compose clear and well-structured email messages that display a professional style communicate fluently and comprehensibly on the phone describe a company or other organisation in English in a professional manner compose an abstract for the Bachelor’s thesis according to KyUAS guidelines. Field-specific goals is able in English to decribe the structure and operation of several vessel types and present technical details relating to the vessels using appropriate English terminology describe the responsibilities and work tasks of the crew, and the operation of onboard equipment in relation to their specialization (Deck Officers: navigation, berthing, mooring, port operations, loading; Marine Engineers: engine room, main and auxiliary engines, fuel system, lubrication, cooling) give a professional presentation on a field-specific topic with consideration to the expectations of an international audience

Common content learning skills using language tools applying for a job, including description of one’s education and competence email and telephone communication description of a company/organisation writing an abstract of the Bachelor’s thesis independent revision of grammar using Opinaika pages and instructions available in Moodle improving the clarity and natural flow of pronunciation Field-specific content vessel types: structure and operation according to specialization (Deck Officer, Marine Engineer), responsibilities and duties of the crew,  and the operation of onboard equipment  

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Description of targets of the assessment is given in the description of the implementation. Scale: Excellent (5), good (4-3), pass (2-1),  fail (0). Grades 3-5 require language skills in the European B2 level. In addition to the criteria for a passed grade specified in the course implementation description, active participation in the tuition is a prerequisite for passing a course.Active participation means that students attend 75% of the contact lessons unless the course implementation informs otherwise.  The language lecturers keep a record of attendance. A course that is failed due to excessive absence cannot be resat by retaking the exam. Instead, the student has to attend the course again. makes sure they have the study material (e.g. the textbook) specified in the curriculum. take part in the contact lesson activities as instructed by the lecturer. complete the given homework and assignments on time according to the lecturer's instructions.If the course completion includes online assignments, frequent failure to meet the deadlines will lead to a failed course. The course that has been registered as “incomplete” due to missing online assignments cannot be resat by retaking the exam or sending the assignments by email. Instead, the online assignments must be completed in a new course implemention within 12 months.
