Descriptions
Emergency nurses are registered as nurses. An emergency nurse’s studies are based on a general nurse’s studies and completed by an emergency nurse’s studies. The minimum requirements of a registered nurse’s professional competence are defined in the directive (2013/55/EU) on recognition of professional competence by the European Union. Nurse education is based on the common competences of all Bachelor’s degrees and the national minimum requirements on a general nurse’s competence drawn by the Future of Nurse Education –project (2013).
In the first study year you familiarize with the professional bases of nursing and emergency care, promotion of wellbeing and health in emergency care and strengthen your professional communication skills. In the Professional Bases of Nursing – practical training you apply your knowledge on clinical nursing.
In the second year you strengthen your competence in clinical nursing. The modules of the second year are: Medical and Surgical Nursing in Emergency Care, Gerontological Nursing and Mental Health and Substance Abuse Work in Emergency Care. Both competence entities include guided clinical practical training.
In the third year you strengthen further your competence in clinical nursing. The module Family- and community-centered nursing in emergency care and the related practice. You strengthen your competence in Evidence-based Nursing in Emergency Care and start your thesis work.
During the third and the fourth study years you increase your competence in the bases of emergency care, in the service systems of emergency care, in the bases of leadership, in the special competence in emergency care, in authority cooperation and operative leadership and free-choice electives to develop your expertise in emergency care. During the fourth year you advance to the planning and implementation phase of your thesis.
Objective
Core Competences
The studies developing preparedness to working life support the student’s acting in the university environment and working life both as an independent actor and as a team member. In addition these studies help the student make choices concerning their studies and practice, which support their professional growth and goals in relation to the degree desired. The student gets preparedness for writing the Bachelor’s thesis and for describing and marketing their own competence.
Having completed the language and communication studies the student is capable of communicating functionally, both orally and in writing, with people of their field or with an external audience. The student is capable of autonomous international communication and interaction in the second domestic language and in English.
The programme specific education is based on EU- directives on general nursing (180cr) and the nationally defined competences on nurse education:

Complementary Competences
The complementary competence is based on the core competence. During the complementary studies the student has an option to direct their studies following their individual choices. The complementary studies of an emergency nurse consist of the study units of bases of expertise in emergency care and the expertise of an emergency nurse as well as free-choice electives, diversified studies in leadership, diversified studies of innovation and entrepreneurship and Russian competence.
Studies in the development of a nurse’s expertise improve the core competence in public health, in acute and intensive care work, in multi-professional rehabilitative care or in empowering invention.
Leadership studies develop the ability to observe leadership in various operational environments. The student adopts the basic knowledge and skills in leadership and is encouraged to act in a superior’s role and to develop their leadership during the studies and in working life.
Leadership and entrepreneurship –module develops the student’s values and ethical competence, in which appreciation of different people, self-confidence, ideology, own passion, networking and constructive diversified working are essential.
