Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- conventions, regulations and codes regarding ship maintenance
- assessment of defects and damage to cargo spaces, hatches and ballast tanks and appropriate actions
- ship’s service and maintenance
- ship’s painting and surface preparations
- dry-docking practices and procedures
- principles of ship docking and classification

Content

- principles of service and maintenance and SOLAS and ESP requirements
- ship’s hull, cargo spaces and ballast tank inspections
- corrosion avoidance and material fatigue
- ship’s in-service maintenance and repair, painting and surface treatment
- planning and organization of docking
- dockyard operations and service specifications
- ship surveys and classification

Accomplishment methods

Students can:
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- work as team members in working life expert duties and identify and describe the problems of the professional field
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-II/2 column 4 are used:
- evaluations are based on accepted principles, well-founded arguments and correctly carried out. The decisions taken are acceptable, taking into consideration the safety of the ship and the prevailing conditions
- procedures for monitoring operations and maintenance comply with legislative requirements
- potential non-compliance is promptly and fully identified
- planned renewal and extension of certificates ensures continued validity of surveyed items and equipment
