Objective

The student is able to communicate assertively in English in the professional context, paying attention to the demands of the situation, and also in unexpected situations. The student is familiar with the main concepts of the field and can utilise her language skills in tasks requiring expertise. The target level is B2 in the European Framework (CEF) also in work-related situations. The prerequisite for the course is grade cum laude in Finnish matriculation examination, level B2 in the entrance level test, or pass grade in the prep course. A student who has been instructed to participate in the prep course must pass the prep course before she can take the exam of this course. It is very recommendable to pass the Prep course before starting this course. Common objectives After completion of the course the student is able to evaluate her own learning, evaluate success of communication situations, and apply her skills in new situations is able to efficiently use language tools (eg. Internet dictionaries, search machines, and proof-reading tools) is able to adapt her communication style according to the situation, interlocutor, and language skills of participants. is aware of the impact of culture on communication Is able in English to ·       draft a job application and participate in a job interview, and in these situations   describe her competence and education ·         compose clear and well-structured e-mail messages that display professional style ·         communicate fluently and comprehensibly on the phone ·         describe a company or other organisation in English in a professional manner ·         compose an abstract for the Bachelor’s thesis according to KyUAS guidelines. Field-specific objectives After completion of the course the student can present their field can describe their work, assignments can use and explain basic concepts in the field, give instructions concerning the client's care while paying attention to the patient's knowledge and expectations  knows basic concepts of anatomy, most common complaints in English can interview patients in English  

Content

Common content learning skills using language tools applying for a job, including description of one’s education and competence e-mail and telephone communication description of a company/organisation writing an abstract of the Bachelor’s thesis independent revision of grammar using Opinaika pages and instructions available in the Moodle internationally intelligible pronunciation Field-specific content possible  work environments, professions      main concepts of elderly care and anatomy medications, instructions and possible side effects, rehabilitation, and exercise symptoms, illnesses, and aging

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Description of targets of the assessment is given in the description of the implementation. Scale: Excellent (5), good (4-3), pass (2-1),  fail (0). Grades 3-5 require language skills in the European B2 level. In addition to the criteria for a passed grade specified in the course implementation description, active participation in the tuition is a prerequisite for passing a course.Active participation means that the student attends 75% of the amount of contact lessons unless the course implementation informs otherwise.  The language lecturers record attendances in attendance registers. A course that is failed due to too many absences cannot be resat by retaking the exam. Instead, the student has to attend the course again. makes sure that they have the study material (e.g. the textbook) specified in the curriculum. takes part in the activities instructed by the lecturer in the contact lessons.  completes the given homework according to the lecturer's instructions and on time.
