Objective
Knowledge, understanding and proficiency of STCW table A-II/2 function: Navigation at the management level. This course concentrates on learning the following competencies:
- plan a voyage and conduct navigation
- determine position and the accuracy of resultant position fix by any means
- determine and allow for compass errors
- establish watchkeeping arrangements and procedures
- maintain safe navigation through the use of information from navigation equipment and systems to assist command decision making
- maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making
- forecast weather and oceanographic conditions
- manoeuvre and handle a ship in all conditions
- operate remote controls of propulsion plant and engineering systems and services.
Content
This course contains supervised simulator exercises, which are based on previously completed theory studies. These exercises have been grouped to form the following simulator training days, which have different themes:
- plan passages and conduct navigation
- ship manoeuvring and anchoring in different traffic conditions inside VTS areas
- ship manoeuvring in restricted and shallow waters and different hydrodynamic effects
- arrival to and departure from port
- ship handling and basics of berthing and unberthing
- ship manoeuvring in challenging conditions
- competence test.
