Degree programme description

The Degree Programme in Business Information Technology (210 ECTS credits) is structured in four parts as follows:
• Core competence 130 ECTS credits
• Complementary competence 35 ECTS credits
• Practical training 30 ECTS credits
• Bachelor’s thesis 15 ECTS credits

Through core competence studies, you adopt knowledge and skills required of all the graduates of the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology. The core competence studies that all graduates must master are divided into basic and professional studies and are typically completed during the first two and a half years of studies.

The content of complementary competence is freely chosen by students. These optional studies enhance the core competence of the degree. With your choices, you can steer your expertise in the direction you want.

The studies include:
• Programming and application design
• Information content management, implementation and design
• General application development skills, such as requirement analysis or testing
The application developer’s profession requires programming skills. Programming plays a major role in the content of the degree programme. Studying programming starts with the basics and the skills develop during the studies. At the end of their studies, all graduates have sufficient programming skills for general application development.

In addition to programming, the skills of application developers includes managing, implementing and designing a variety of information content. Digital applications often contain some sort of information content, such as text, images, sound, videos, animations, 3D models, geospatial data, databases, etc. The Degree Programme in Business Information Technology provides you with strong knowledge and skills in this area of application development.
Developing digital applications requires skills beyond programming and data content. These generic application development skills involve either expertise in graphic design or service design, or expertise in different areas of software engineering, such as requirement analysis, testing, or information security. Common application development skills also include communication and language skills as well as business and project skills that are naturally part of your studies.
Choice of major studies or specialization

There are no major studies on specialization courses in the degree programme, but you can affect the direction of your studies and specialization. After two and a half years of studies, you can, for example, choose the professional programmer’s specialty studies or alternatively complete your degree with work-oriented project studies.
It is possible to complete additional and optional studies as part of the degree in full accordance with personal study objectives. You can freely choose content from the selection of other degree programmes at Xamk. There are many opportunities to complement computing studies; computer technology, game development, cyber security, graphic design, entrepreneurship and business studies, etc.

Objectives

The digital world and its applications play an important role both in working life and in people’s everyday lives. The ever-expanding supply of digital applications and services requires application development professionals with good prospects for employment.

After you graduate from the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology, you are an application developer with a variety of computing and programming skills. You are a skilled independent actor and can works as a member or a leader in development teams.

In the field of application development, you are the developer of applications specifically designed for human use. You have strong technical skills, for example, programming or content management. You also understand the importance of an overall view of application development, user-specific needs, user experience and operation quality.

Implementation of studies and flexible learning tracks

The studies are carried out as traditional daytime teaching on Xamk’s Mikkeli campus. The studies are teacher-led and have contact lessons. There are approximately 24 hours of contact lessons per week.
You learn the contents of the course through practical exercises and implementation projects, not forgetting the processing of theoretical knowledge. Completing the courses also requires independent study as well as initiative and self-direction. Individual courses can also be completed, on a case-by-case basis, through online studies or recognition of prior learning.

The language of instruction in communication and teaching interactions is primarily Finnish. However, most of the study materials are in English and some of the optional studies are only available in English. The bachelor’s thesis report is written in Finnish.

The studies are organized as online distance education. Studying and completing courses is possible without attending teaching lessons and is suitable for studying, for example, while working full-time. However, attendance is required in some exceptional cases during the studies, such as the orientation day at the start of studies, at the entrance examination or at graduate seminars.

The online studies take place regardless of time and place as much as possible. However, the timing and pace of studies are controlled. Studies must proceed in a specific order in order for the competence to develop appropriately.

The goals and content of the online studies are the same as in the daytime implementation. Studying online requires activity, initiative and independent work. In your studies, you use a computer and network connection you have acquired yourself. Studies are carried out through independent study of teaching materials and presentations as well as through various learning assignments or exams. Learning outcomes are validated on a course-specific basis, eg through personal interviews or tests.

The language of instruction in communication and teaching interactions is primarily Finnish. However, most of the study materials are in English and some of the optional studies are only available in English. The bachelor´s thesis report is written in Finnish.

Career opportunities

After completing your degree, you can work in different expert roles in application development. Tasks may include application design, development and implementation tasks, management tasks, training tasks, or marketing and sales tasks. The studies also equip you to become an entrepreneur.
After graduation, your career typically begins with expert-level tasks that include a lot of practical implementation in addition to planning and administration. As your career progresses, you may progress to management and leadership roles.
Job titles can include:
• Application developer
• Software developer
• Program designer
• Software designer
• Web designer
• Media specialist
• Programmer
