Objective
Knowledge of GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) in detail as well as operation and purposes of its sub systems. Principles of using the frequencies of the global maritime distress and safety system. Correct use of all equipment of ship radio station. The student will be able to pass the theory examination of the GOC qualification concerning maritime radio system and ship radio station. The student knows the procedures of maritime radio traffic as well the use of the frequencies and channels of the global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS). The student is able in any circumstances to perform emergency, safety, and other radio communication duties on MF, HF and VHF frequency bands and via INMARSAT satellite terminals in compliance with international Radio Regulations
Content
Principles of GMDSS. Sea areas and radio equipment aboard ship, coastal radio stations, certificates, radio licenses, literature of a radio station, inspections at a radio station, methods to ensure operation of a radio station, DSC, MF, HF and VHF radiophones, radio telex, mobile VHF radiophones, use of antennas, frequencies and channels of a radio station, radio communication duties, ship earth stations (SES), EPIRB, SART, MSI receiving methods: NAVTEX, INMARSAT ECG and HF/NBDP. Procedures in emergency situations, procedures defined in the Radio Regulations concerning emergency and safety radio communications on MF, HF and VHF frequency channels, and in INMARSAT satellite system: distress traffic, urgent traffic, safety traffic, radio medical traffic. Routine maritime radio communications on MF, HF and VHF frequency channels and via INMARSAT satellite terminals, use of frequencies and channels, making the necessary entries in the radio log, reception and interpretation of MSI messages.
