Objective
You are able to
- demonstrate an understanding of different definitions and the meaning of counselling, patient education, health promotion, adherence, compliance, self-management, and self-regulation
- demonstrate an understanding of the meaning of evidence based practice in patient education and counselling, also the cultural features
- analyse and evaluate health promotion, patient education and counselling in practice
- recognise and develop your own learning and counselling philosophy, style and competence
- become familiar with evidence-based research articles in diabetes education and counselling
- adopt a reflective review to the deveploment of diabetes education and counselling
Content
This 5 cr online course includes three courses:
1. Evidence based diabetes education and counselling 2 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
- demonstrate an understanding of different definitions and the meaning of counselling, patient education, health promotion, adherence, compliance, self-management, and empowerment
- discuss of the cultural features in diabetes education and counselling
2. Development of professional’s own counselling skills 2 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
– to use client education and counselling skills both in individual counseling as well as in group education
– to use knowledge of motivational interviewing as an educational method
– to understand group education
3. Research methods in diabetes education and counselling 1 cr
Objectives:
Student should be able to
– know the basic research methods
– evaluate and read the published diabetes education and counselling literature
– outline key principles of the research article

Assessment methods and criteria
Every part of this online course 2 cr + 2 cr+1cr) will be evaluated accepted/fail.
Xamk Scale is fail/ incomplete/ pass. Incomplete means that the task can be completed (rarely used).
Pass = Successfully completed tests and tasks planned in the course design. If there is discussion, participate and comment discussion as there is in the instruction.
Assignments, discussions and tests to be done. Tests at least 60 % correct answers.
Remember to use the source literature and put them to the end (when it suits to the task).
