Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- types of emergencies that may occur: collision, fire, foundering
- types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships
- equipment in survival craft
- location of personal life-saving appliances
- principles of personal survival

Content

- donning of a lifejacket and immersion suit
- safe jumping from a height into the water
- righting of an inverted lifecraft while wearing a lifejacket
- swimming while wearing a lifejacket
- keeping afloat without a lifejacket
- boarding a survival craft from the ship and water while wearing a lifejacket
- taking actions on board a survival craft to enhance survival
- streaming a sea-anchor
- operating equipment on board a survival craft
- operating devices to determine location and operate radio equipment
- practical drills in a swimming pool, in open water and at survival station

Further information

Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory.

Accomplishment methods

Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically.
- identify interrelated tasks.
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field.
- work as team members in a goal-oriented way.

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-VI/1-1 column 4 are used:
- action taken on identifying muster signals is appropriate to the indicated emergency and complies with established procedures
- the timing and sequence of individual actions are appropriate to the prevailing circumstance and conditions and minimize potential dangers and threats to survival
- method of boarding survival craft is appropriate and avoids dangers to other survivors
- initial actions after leaving the ship and procedures and actions in water minimize threats to survival
