Objective

You know the main concepts of biorefineries using different biofeedstocks and the role of them in increasing renewable energy production and preventing climate change. You know the major biomass refinery processes and process steps. You understand the potential and goals of future biorefineries related to developing new bioproducts.

Content

What raw materials are used to produce bioenergy?
What kind of biofuels can be produced of biofeedstocks?
What are the process stages in biorefineries? What are the main process parameters, chemical reactions and changes?
What kinds of byproducts can be generated in forest industry integrated biorefineries? What are the properties of the byproducts?
What valuable chemicals can be obtained from forest biomass?
What is nano- and microcrystalline cellulose, as well as nanofibrillated cellulose?

Evaluation

a. use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations.
b. assess information sources critically.
c. work as team members in working life expert duties and identify and describe the problems of the professional field.
e. choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices.
