Objective

Student is familiar with the physiology and behavior of calves. Student knows the processes related to calf management and their impact on welfare of the calves. Student is able to observe, evaluate and develop the calf management process in enterprises.

Qualifications

Student is familiar with the high school level biology studies or has secondary school competences. Student is familiar with the typical cattle management practices in Finland.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students knows basics of the most important physiological functions and behavior of calves. Student is aware of the essential phases in calf care and feeding and knows the basics of calf welfare. Student is able to make observations of calves and consider these observations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student knows the most important physiological functions and behavior of calves. Student knows the main processes related to calf management and their impact on welfare of calves. Student is able to observe and evaluate the calf management process and make development proposals.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student is familiar with the physiology and behaviour of calves and is able to implement this theory when making observations of calves. Student knows the processes related to calf management and can observe and evaluate their impact on welfare of calves. Student observes and evaluates the calf management process systematically and develops the process with the entrepreneur.

Evaluation

Learning assignments, individual or in groups of 2-3 students. Seminar presentation.
