Objective

The objective of the course is developing basic language skills. The student understands a limited number of words, short sentences, questions, and prompts; can communicate concisely and introduce oneself; understands short and simple texts; can write a few sentences about oneself and one’s life. Aim to reach CEFR (Common European Framework Reference level): A1.2

Content

Introduction to how Finnish language works. The alphabet, numbers and pronunciation. Communication, vocabulary and structures. Possible themes include personal life, family and friends; studying, work and free time; home, housing, living in Finland; public services (e.g. shopping and library); traveling; time, weather. The course will cover basic Finnish grammar and communication skills, including speaking, writing, speech comprehension and reading. Grammatical themes covered include basic conjugation and declension, verb types, basic sentence, pronunciation. The differences between spoken and written language are taken into account. No prior Finnish or linguistics knowledge is required.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student - can tell one’s name - understands numbers and time - knows some vocabulary of everyday life - understands some simple questions - can tell one or two things about one’s life

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student - can introduce oneself - knows numbers and time expressions and tell most of them - knows the most common vocabulary of everyday life - can make some simple questions - can tell main points about one’s life

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student - can introduce and tell something more about oneself - manages numbers and time expressions - uses common vocabulary of everyday life - manages simple questions and answers quite fluently - can describe one’s life independently

Further information

Students have the possibility to demonstrate their previously acquired competences, for which they do not have a certificate issued by a higher education institution by taking the RPL (Recognition of prior learning) test.
