Objectives

Having completed these master’s degree studies, you are capable of applying multidisciplinary and evidence-based knowledge and development methods, which will strengthen your expertise in rehabilitation practices and related research-oriented development.

You will gain a deeper understanding of the health effects of interventions and technologies that aim to promote individual physical activity, and you will have the competence required in the management and reorganisation of rehabilitation practices.

You are able to evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of client-oriented rehabilitation services.

You are able to communicate and work in multidisciplinary national and international teams and networks in the field of rehabilitation.

Degree programme description

The scope of rehabilitation studies is 90 ECTS credits divided into three parts: core competence (35 ECTS credits), supplementary competence (25 ECTS credits) and master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits).

CORE COMPETENCE 35 ECTS credits

Future-oriented competence in rehabilitation services 20 ECTS credits

- Rehabilitation policy and rehabilitation approaches 5 cr

- Multidisciplinary assessment of human functioning 5 cr

- Management of promoting physical activity interventions 5 cr

- Wellbeing technologies in rehabilitation 5 cr.

Research, development and innovation skills -15 ECTS credits

- Client-oriented evaluation and development of rehabilitation services 5 cr.

- Effectiveness of rehabilitation services 5 cr

- Basics and methods of research-oriented development 5 cr

Master’s thesis – 30 ECTS credits

SUPPLEMENTARY COMPETENCE - 25 ECTS credits

Based on your interests, you can choose complementary competence studies from a wide range of Xamk Master School common studies. Among these studies, at least one course in leadership skills must be chosen to meet the objectives set for the master’s degree studies.

The common studies comprise courses in the following fields:
- Research and development
- Management, leadership and entrepreneurship
- International working environments
- Information, digital services and networks.

You can also choose complementary competence studies from other universities if they are offered as master’s degree level studies. More information is provided by the Degree Programme Coordinator.

If you have previously completed studies at the level of EQF 7 that match the objectives of the degree programme, these studies can be included in your rehabilitation degree programme studies. More information is provided by the Degree Programme Coordinator.?

After graduation, you may find employment in various management, leadership, development and specialist positions. For many of our students, completing a master’s degree paves the way to more responsible and challenging tasks. The degree programme also provides you with the skills and competencies needed in entrepreneurial activities.

You can apply for a master’s degree programme if you have completed a suitable bachelor’s degree. In some cases, an equivalent degree obtained in other post-secondary level education also gives the eligibility to apply. Additionally, a minimum of two years of work experience is required.

Work experience is required as a practical foundation to further expand and strengthen your skills at Master School.

Xamk’s master’s degrees are carried out within the framework of Master School, a multidisciplinary student and learning community.

Xamk has a 15-year-long history in arranging master’s degree programmes, with 27 programmes currently ongoing.

Tuition is provided free-of-charge, and studies can be completed alongside work.

A master’s degree awarded by a university of applied sciences is equivalent to an academic master’s degree earned from a scientific university.

Implementation of studies and flexible learning tracks

In total, the duration of studies ranges from two to three years (90 ECTS credits).

The degree programme studies are fully implemented by means of an eLearning platform and online courses, including webinars, group meetings, project work, independent tasks and peer discussions. The student must have a computer fitted with a web-cam and software necessary for the completion of studies and a microphone (head-set).

The online lessons take place on predetermined days. The number of online lesson days is 2-3 per month for the first year and 1-2 for the second year.

It is advised that written reports and other assignments are integrated into your own field of work with a focus on the development of rehabilitation practices.

The language of instruction is English. Tuition, assignments, exams and the master’s thesis writing process are instructed, conducted and completed in English.

Career opportunities

The master’s degree programme in rehabilitation provides you with the competencies and skills required in specialist and expert positions in the field of rehabilitation, including the sectors of development, management and leadership. The degree programme also provides you with the skills and competencies needed in entrepreneurial activities.

In Finland, a Master’s degree awarded by a university of applied sciences ensures the same eligibility for public positions as a Master’s degree taken at a scientific university.

The degree programme is multidisciplinary, providing you with the opportunity to meet professionals from various fields during your studies. Together with your teachers, they encourage critical thinking and argumentation skills. As a result, you do not only gain new perspectives to your own field, but also contribute to the development of other fields.

Networks created with experts during studies are also a considerable advantage to you after graduation. This is something that students graduating from Xamk Master School consider one of the most important aspects of their studies.

At Master School, you learn to retrieve and process field-specific research data and apply it to your own work. Learning is research-based, development-oriented and aimed at promoting innovation. Among Finnish universities of applied sciences, Xamk stands out as the largest in the field of RDI activities; the total number of ongoing projects per year is nearly 200.
