Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
- fight and extinguish fires

Content

- the elements of fire and explosion, the fire triangle
- shipboard fire-fighting organization
- location of fire-fighting appliances and emergency routes
- types and sources of ignition
- flammable materials, fire hazards and spread of fire
- the need for constant vigilance
- actions to be taken on board ship
- fire and smoke detection and automatic alarm systems
- classification of fire and applicable extinguishing agents
- this course includes a two-day basic fire-fighting practical exercise at a fire training centre

Further information

Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory. In addition, approved accomplishment of fire prevention and fire fighting course (STCW A-VI/1-2) is required.
