Objective

You understand the value of audio in games and other consumer products.
You know how audio is presented and stored in digital form.
You understand how the basic properties of audio affect the listening experience.
You are familiar with the key principles of good audio design and can create well-working audio for games.
You can use synthesizers and create new instrument sounds.
You know how to make simple sound effects.

Content

What is the role of audio in games and other consumer media products?
How is audio is represented: for example in terms of waveform, amplitude, frequency content and its interpreted?
What are different audio formats and audio compression (lossless, lossy)?
What are audio properties, such as tempo and pitch?
How is audio generated? What are synthesizers, oscillators and filters?
What are foley sounds and how to produce them?
What are sound effects, including distortion, clipping, compression, reverb, fade in/out and crossfade?

Evaluation

Students can
a. use professional vocabulary systematically.

c. identify interrelated tasks.
e. use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field.
