Basics of research and development work (5 cr)

Objective

You are familiar with the different stages of the research process. You are familiar with the main topics and methods of research and development work in the tourism and hospitality sector. You can analyze the needs for research information and choose the best information sources for your thesis as well as assess the sources critically. You can plan, carry out and report a small scale research project. You know the principles of research and development communication as well as the thesis instructions and seminar practices of Xamk and your own degree programme.

Content

What is included in research and development work in tourism and hospitality sector and which methods are used? What is a bachelor’s thesis like at a university of applied sciences? What are the key concepts related to research? How does research proceed as a process? How do you carry out qualitative and quantitative research from the viewpoint of data collection and analysis? How do you handle the variety of research data using information technology? How do you present research results and development proposals? How do you find appropriate sources for research and development work?

Study forms and methods

Työviikkopohjainen oppimisväylä:
Opintojaksolla opiskellaan ryhmissä tutkimus- ja kehittämistyön perusteita ja harjoitellaan tutkimusaineistojen keruuta ja analysointia. Opintojakson suoritusvaatimuksena on aktiivinen osallistuminen opetukseen sekä opintojaksojen tehtävien hyväksytty suorittaminen pienryhmässä.

Opintoja nopeuttava oppimisväylä:
Voit suorittaa opintojakson itsenäisesti verkko-opintoina opiskelemalla tutkimusmenetelmäasioita ja tiedonhankintaa sekä soveltamalla opittua tehtävissä itsenäisesti tai yhdessä muiden nopeuttajien kanssa. Menetelmäosaamista syvennetään kirjallisuuteen perehtymällä.

Työhön integroitu oppimisväylä:
Jos työskentelet alan yrityksessä, organisaatiossa tai korkeakoulun tarjoamassa projektissa, voit suorittaa opintojakson työpaikallasi tai työelämäprojektissa joko kokonaan tai osittain. Tällöin ole yhteydessä opintojakson alussa opintojakson opettajaan ja sovi työpaikkasi tai työelämäprojektin opinnollistamisesta opintojakson osaamistavoitteita tukevaksi. Oppiminen edellyttää, että työssäsi tai työelämäprojektissa perehdyt opintojaksolla käsiteltäviin teemoihin ja hallitset ne sekä teoriassa että käytännössä. Osoitat osaamisesi näyttönä, jonka laajuus määräytyy opintojakson oppimistavoitteiden mukaan.

Student workload

5 op = 5 x 27 tuntia opiskelijan työtä. Yhteensä 135 tuntia.
Lähiopetusta 40 tuntia, itsenäistä työskentelyä 93 tuntia.

Course part description

Opintojaksossa on kaksi osaa:
- tutkimus- ja kehitystyön menetelmien osuus on 4 op ja
- tieteellisen viestinnän osuus 1 op.

Students can a. use the key concepts of research and development work professionally b. look for information in the key information sources of the field and evaluate information sources critically c. work innovatively and independently in working life expert duties and creatively identify and solve problems in the professional field. e. use research and development methods, software and techniques when analyzing and processing data.

Assessment methods and criteria

Opintojakso arvioidaan oppimis- ja harjoitustehtävien perusteella kummassakin osassa. Tieteellisen viestinnän osuuden arviointi on asteikolla hyväksytty/hylätty.
