Objective

You show familiarity with the basics of thermodynamics, circulation processes and energy balance calculations. You manage basic technologies of renewable energy production.

Content

What are the basics of thermodynamics?
How to analyse circulation processes?
How to make energy flow calculations?
What are the main renewable energy sources?

Course material

Helgren, Heikkinen, Suomalainen, Kala: Energy and the environment
Energy in Finland - Technology, economy and environmental effects
Solar electricity, Rae Perälä
Literature in the energy sector and online materials found on the sector's website.
Educational material to be distributed on the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

Lessons and exercises performed during lessons as contact teaching.
Electronic intermediate tests/exam
It is also possible to complete the course by applying for recognition of competence by presenting a substitute course credit.

RDI and work-related cooperation

no

Timing of exams and assignments

The course uses electronic/written scored intermediate tests/exam.
Presentation of the practice work done as group work on the chosen topic at the agreed time.

International cooperation

The course does not include international collaboration.

Student workload

1 ECTS corresponds to 27,5 hours of student working time.
However, the amount of work depends on the study methods and from previous competence.

Course part description

-Finland's and the world's energy procurement
-The main rules of thermodynamics
-Energy use
-Energy engineering concepts
-Profitability calculation of energy technology
-State changes of gases
-Circulation processes
-Combustion techniques
-Back pressure force
-Hydroelectric
-Wind power
-Solar power

Further information

Theory lessons are held as contact teaching.
Exercise tasks partly in lessons and partly independently
Electronic intermediate tests/exam are done independently

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is based on the total score from the electronic intermediate tests/exams. The prescribed minimum score obtained from each electronic intermediate tests/exam for the approved performance of that midterm test/exam.
The exercise task done as group work is evaluated as passed/failed

Qualifications

Basic engineering physics and chemistry
