Objective

- You learn to draw different types of sleeves, tailored and shawl collars and apply your skills and knowledge in cutting patterns of fashion and historical costumes.
- You know professional technical constructions of a lined garment and know how to use them appropriately.
- You learn to observe the shapes and proportions of the body for pattern production, and you know how to cut patterns and do 3D-developments of a variety of basic models.
- You learn different methods of processing and patinating various materials.
- You learn to apply different kinds of textile printing specialty techniques to the fabrics of costumes and to the design of fashion products.

- How to cut patterns for different types of sleeves, tailored and shawl collars?
- How to line a garment?
- How to cut patterns and do 3D-developments of a variety of basic models, collars and sleeves?
- How to process and patinate a variety of materials?
- What kinds of textile printing specialty techniques can you apply to fabrics of costumes and design of fashion fabrics?

Course material

Available in Learn platform. Possibly different books, articles etc. which the teacher will hand out. Student will need basic sewing equipment.

Study forms and methods

Studies can follow different tracks depending on students’ situations in life. There are three different tracks for the studies: scheduled track, independent track and blended track

Plan which track is best for you with your personal counselor of your studies. The final way how one will participate in the course will be determined together with the teacher of the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Outside worklife related projects are not emphasized in this course.

Timing of exams and assignments

Small exam will be taken during the course. Mostly there will be several smaller assignments - those should be turned in at the end of the course.

International cooperation

International projects are not emphasized in this course.

Student workload

Equals approximately 135 hours of student work - about 4 weeks. The course includes partly guided workshop type work and lectures and partly independent working.

Course part description

During the course students will learn about different structures used in clothing and designing and creating interesting surfaces and textures for fabrics and clothing.

The course is divided into several segments:
- surface and texture segment includes for example embroidery and fabric printing techiques.
- pattern drafting on a fashion dummy - basic techniques
- flat pattern drafting for sleeves and collars
- lining and interfacing basics

Each segment includes different assignments, trying out techniques, sewing small samples etc.

Further information

The course precedes Fashion collection design and Implementation and documentation of a fashion collection design courses.
As several samples will be sewn and different techniques tried out students should bring materials for those assignments. Students will also need basic sewing and drawing supplies and pattern drafting supplies.

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The course will be graded from 1-5. Each teacher will grade their part of the course and the average will be counted.
