Fashion collection design (5 cr)

Objective

After finishing the course you know how to:
- create ideas and design products/product lines/collections that meet the needs and expectations of your chosen customer or target group
- observe the various purposes of products, both from ecological and economic perspectives, when choosing materials, machinery and manufacturing methods for the designed unit
- produce a presentation portfolio according to the theme, for the target group (for marketing and promotion purposes)
- observe and take into account the proportions of the human body and the impact of various models and cut lines on the general look
- deepen your knowledge and skills in computer software for the creation of technical drawings, in addition to the skills learned on the From draft to garment course.

Content

- What background information and material do you need to design a collection, and how do collect and study this information?
- It is important to create a concept for your collection: How do you start working and how do you proceed? In what fields of fashion/studies and how can you develop your knowledge, knowhow, skills and ideas concerning the creation of a fashion collection?

Available in Learn platform. Possibly different books, articles etc. which the teacher will hand out.

Study forms and methods

Studies can follow different tracks depending on students’ situations in life. There are three different tracks for the studies: scheduled track, independent track and blended track

Plan which track is best for you with your personal counselor of your studies. The final way how one will participate in the course will be determined together with the teacher of the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Outside worklife related projects are not emphasized in this course.

Timing of exams and assignments

No exam - the fashion collection design should be ready when/if taking part to the Implementation and documentation of a fashion collection design -course (Malliston toteutus ja dokumentointi).

International cooperation

International projects are not emphasized in this course.

Student workload

Equals approximately 135 hours of student work - about 4 weeks. The course includes partly guided workshop type work and lectures and partly independent working.

Course part description

Designing a fashion collection - Iida Silvennoinen. Students learn a typical fashion collection design process from inspiration to the finished collection design.
Theatre costume design - Maarit Kalmakurki. Students will understand what differentiates fashion design and costume design and learn procedures used in costume design in theatre, film and tv work etc.

Part of the fashion collection will be sewn during Implementation and documentation of a fashion collection design -course (Malliston toteutus ja dokumentointi).

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

Student work will be graded between grades 1-5. One needs to take part to the lectures and workshop part and turn in the needed assignments.
