Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- basics in internal combustion engines, working principles and design
- auxiliary equipment and systems of marine diesel engines
- basic IC-engine concepts and general equations of design and performance
- principles of 2-stroke and 4-storke marine diesel engines and their exploitation as prime movers of propulsion and in electric power production
- operation procedures and monitoring of diesel engines as a watchkeeping officer
- basic maintenance and service tasks of marine diesel engines
Content
- theory of internal combustion engines and primarily diesel engines, engine constructions and concepts including associated basic calculations
- basic types of marine diesel engines; trunk piston engines and crosshead engines
- diesel engine as a prime mover in propulsion and electric generation
- auxiliary equipment, systems and devices of engines
- isolation of engines, and safety at work when servicing marine diesel engines
- most common monitoring and maintenance methods of diesel engines
- safety equipment and failure detection of diesel engines
Evaluation
Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- identify interrelated tasks
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field
In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-III/1 column 4 are used:
- construction and operating mechanisms can be understood and explained with drawings/instructions
-the causes of machinery malfunctions are promptly identified and actions are designed to ensure the overall safety of the ship and the plant, having regard to the prevailing circumstances and conditions
- the output of plant and engineering systems consistently meets requirements, including bridge orders relating to changes in speed and direction
- safety procedures followed are appropriate
Course material
