Objective

You can actively use the basic vocabulary of your own field in English.

You can act in English in different communication situations in your field at the European skill level B2.

You can search for information in English-language sources and apply it to study and work.

Content

What essential professional vocabulary do you need?
How do you search information in sources of your field and apply it?
How do you act in English in spoken communication situations and compose texts needed in your field?
How do you communicate in English in the study community and in the workplace?

Study forms and methods

• The course is mainly carried out by way of unscheduled online study but it also has 6 scheduled online lessons. The scheduled online lessons entail work in groups and require active participation. Participation in scheduled online lessons is not mandatory. Participation in • Studies are carried out on the Learn platform. Access to the platform opens on the starting day of the course.
• The assignments must be submitted by 30 November.
• The course involves an exam, which is to be taken in the Exam acqurium in December.
• Feedback is provided by different methods, in writing and/or orally. Also, peer feedback can be used.

Timing of exams and assignments

The seminar presentation must be given at one of the three seminar sessions of your choice.
Assignments must be submitted by November 30th.
The oral examination (group discussion) will take place on Teams during December at a time chosen from the options provided by the teacher.
You must book a time for the written exam in the exam aquarium between December 1st and December 31st.

Student workload

1 credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload depends on study skills and prior knowledge.
In a 5-credit course, the student’s workload is approximately 135 hours.

If you have been directed to English prep course training based on the placement test, it is highly recommended to complete it before participating in this course

Assessment methods and criteria

The assignments to be submitted and the seminar are graded on a pass/fail basis. The course grade is based on a written exam in the Exam Aquarium (60% weight in the grade) and an oral examination (40% weight in the grade). Both the written exam and the oral examination must be passed to complete the course.

Qualifications

The student can communicate independently in communication situations (level B1).
