Objective

After completing the course, you are capable of
- interpreting the content of essential shipping documents used in seaborne trade.
- identifying and understanding phrases and vocabulary typical of commercial shipping documents and agreements.
- understanding the rights, responsibilities and liabilities of the various parties to a shipping document.

Content

Are you able to explain the content of a bill of lading and do you understand the related terms and conditions written in English?
Are you able to explain the content of a charter party and do you understand the related terms and conditions written in English?
Are you aware of other shipping and insurance documents used in seaborne trade?

Course material

The study materials are provided by the teacher via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

Apart from an in-class starting session, the course is carried out entirely by way of unscheduled online study.

The assessed assignments are completed individually, and they must be submitted by the enddate of the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

This course entails no RDI nor work-related cooperation.

Timing of exams and assignments

All assignments must be completed, and an online exam must be taken by the end of the course. The end date of the course is presented in the course details. By this date, the student must submit all assignments and take the required online exam.

International cooperation

There is no international cooperation in this course.

Student workload

By definition, 1 ECTS credit equals 27 hours of work by the student. However, the effective amount of work depends on the student’s study skills and prior learning.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s performance is assessed with reference to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The completion of the course requires all assignments to be completed with a passing grade, and the exam to be taken with a passing grade.

Assessment scale of passing grades is 1–5, and 0 for a failed performance.
