Objective

After completing the course, the student is able to communicate via VHF radio onboard a ship in routine, urgency and distress situations using standardised terminology and phrases (IMO SMCP).

Content

The course covers the following sections of SMCP handbook:
- general procedures
- selected standardised terminology
- selected standardised phrases (e.g. traffic in fairway, port entry and departure, anchoring, weather and sea state, buoyage)
- urgency and distress communication

Course material

The study materials are provided by the teacher via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

The course is carried out by way of contact teaching on Kotka campus according to a weekly schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, scheduled contact lessons are not recorded nor duplicated by online lectures. Minimum attendance requirement in classroom exercises is more than 50%.

Independent study is carried out on the Learn platform. Access to the platform opens on the starting day of the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

This course does not include RDI or work-related cooperation.

Timing of exams and assignments

Assignments must be completed by the given deadlines, and an exam via the Exam system must be taken at the end of the course. The end date of the course is presented in the course details. By this date, the student must submit all assignments and take the exam.

International cooperation

There is no international cooperation in this course.

Student workload

By definition, 1 ECTS credit equals 27 hours of work by the student. However, the effective amount of work depends on the student’s study skills and prior learning.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s performance is assessed with reference to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The completion of the course requires all assignments to be completed with a passing grade, and the exam to be taken with a passing grade.

Assessment scale is pass/fail.

Qualifications

Participation in this course requires that the student has completed the courses Maritime English 1, Maritime English 2 and Maritime English 3, or is simultaneously completing them.
