Objective

The student will improve her/his competence in professional English communication in her/his field. S/he will have a better command of field-related terminology and practise English communication in expert tasks. After completing the course, the student is able to describe and discuss matters relating to maritime safety, chart plotting and navigation, as well as loading and discharging. Also, the student will be able to analyse the features of technical reporting and write an abstract for her/his thesis.

Course material

The course material consists of online material in Learn compiled by the teacher and the students.

Study forms and methods

Scheduled track:
The studies include scheduled classes as well as independent work with the materials provided by the teacher.
The classes provide a platform to practice the course content orally and in small groups. The attendance policy is 50% of the classes provided.

There will be a written exam at the end of the course.

The course material consists of modules that all include practice tasks as well as obligatory tasks to be submitted according to the course's time frame. The submission timelines and assessment are presented on the Learn page.

Independent track:
Each case must be initiated by the student and will be independently decided.

Blended track:
Each case must be initiated by the student and will be independently decided.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Timing of exams and assignments

Re-sit exam dates are specifically agreed upon within 12 months of the end date of the course.

The student's workload corresponds to approximately 54 hours of work, depending on the student's previous knowledge and study skills.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course makes use of continuous assessment. At the end of the course, the final grade is determined by a written exam and the mandatory course assignments.

Assessment is based on The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To pass the course, students must complete the assignments with a grade to pass and reach level B1.1 on the CERF scale in the exams.

Qualifications

Participation in this course requires that the student has completed the courses Maritime English 1 and Maritime English 2, or is simultaneously completing them.
